2 Ways to wear Boyfriend Jeans

I've been dying for a pair of distressed boyfriend jeans for the longest time but the ones I like are in the £260 mark. Paying that much money for a pair of jeans is just plain wrong. I've got my eye on J Brand Aidan jeans which costs $218 in the US but over here, we have to fork out nearly twice as much. Needless to say, I'm envious of my American friends who have access to a plethora of brands at a much lower price.

I decided to do the next best thing. Get a similar pair from eBay. I paid roughly £46 for these new  7 for All Mankind Josefina Boyfriend Capris. Since I stand at 5'2 on my bare feet, I thought they would fit me perfectly lengthwise. What I forgot was that I have longer legs/shorter torso ratio. The hem came right above my calf. Not a good look. Which brings to my final point - clam diggers are best suited for digging clams.

If you know anything about me, you'll know that I don't do DIY. The hubby and our friend, G had to rescue an Ikea chest of drawers, the only item that I built literally collapsed after less than 3 months of use. Anyway....... I decided to remove the stitches along the hem to get an additional 2 to 3 inches. Folded it a couple of times and ironed it flat. Voila, I saved myself £214.

Outfit: Jigsaw Trilby (similar here), Uniqlo striped jumper (similar affordable option here and global, here), Alexander Wang t-shirt, K Jacques Picon sandals, Chanel sunnies and 7 for All Mankind Josefina Boyfriend (similar affordable option here and global, here)
Lil L: Petit Bateau cardigan, Petit Bateau floral smock dress, Petit Bateau leggings and Salt-Water sandals

Outfit: Etoile Isabel Marant utility jacket, Uniqlo t-shirt (similar here), Hermes belt, K Jacques Picon sandals, 7 for All Mankind Josefina Boyfriend, Louis Vuitton Speedy Bandouliere 35cm.

The 7 for All Mankind Josefina Boyfriend jeans are super comfortable and soft. They're a pleasant change from my tight fitting skinny jeans. Boyfriend jeans are perfect in the summer months when you don't want your denim plastered to your legs under the hot and scorching sun. I normally would not wear jeans on long haul flights but I'm happy to do so in these denim.

I didn't get a chance to take the usual pairing photos so you'll have to make do with my holiday shots.  After years of being anonymous, I guess it's time to show my soon to be 40 year old face, wrinkles and all!

  1. I see you! Oh it feels weird showing your face online doesn't it? I love boyfriend jeans, I'd love to have a pair of jeans that don't cut off my circulation at my waist, when I'm at home my button is always undone!

  2. Woooohoooooooooo!!!! Dunno why, but so happy to see your face. And Little L's. :))

  3. Well hello! What took you so long :-) The jeans are great. I just can't seem to wear these boyfriend styles, oh well. And as for the DIY, I totally understand, I avoid it like the plague but you did a good job!
Hope you're enjoying the last few weeks of Summer.

  4. Hello!!! So nice to see your face. I used to have this exact pair but sold them on ebay because they just didn't fit my short short legs right. You look great! Love the sandals.

  5. Just wanted to say that you and Lil L have lovely faces :) And I adore your sandals.

  6. You did well to alter those and why are so many of us 5ft 2? You saw my dilemma over the Current Elliott Dad jeans which are just slightly baggier than a boyfriend but the same shape and cut, I think I have been persuaded by you lovely bloggers to keep them and not cut them up into shorts!

  7. Have I been missing something from the blogosphere during my summer break in Provence ? Huurrrrray ! It's nice to see you for real ! Love the picture with your marinière jumper !

    1. Françoise, I so wish I had booked the flight to Provence. Ah well. It's all in hindsight. It's rather odd being in the photos. Friends and family have commented that they have not seen an updated photo of me in 2 years. Must say, I much rather be behind the lens.

  10. Hi! You and Lil L look stunning:) It's lovely to see your beautiful faces. I like both of your outfits and the pop of color in your sandals.

Is that the new LV item you mentioned in the comments on another post? Totally agree with you regarding jeans- you would laugh if I told you where mine are from;)

    1. Now that you've piqued my curiosity, you'll have to tell me where you bought your jeans! Yes, this is the LV speedy. Love the bag but am still getting used to the monogram.

  11. Oh how lovely to see you and put a face to the wonderful writing. Both of you are so pretty. Maybe if the hubs is obliging, he may take some nice shots of me with the boys when we are on holiday but so far the one's I've done of myself holding a camera at arm's length have been quite scary. A bit like the fisheye lens effect which is extraordinarily unflattering.

Really pleased that you have finally got yourself some boyfriend jeans - I bet it's changed the way you view your wardrobe somewhat. Will there be some more pictures of your good self in the future? And I'd like to ask - where are the wrinkles? At least you didn't get airbrushed like I did by a friend who took a picture of me recently. Now that's telling you something!

Oh yes - one last thing - love the hat! I've only just managed to find myself one for the hols - it's taken years!

    1. You're far too kind, Sue. I don't know about pretty but like the boyfriend jeans, glasses can hide a multitude of lines on the face. It took 10 minutes to teach the hubs how to operate the camera. I think we nearly strangled each other during the process!

I've got a tiny hat so was rather pleased to stumble upon this one by Jigsaw. It is made of straw, not cheap paper and thankfully, wasn't expensive at all.

  12. Hello Marlene! It's nice to see you on your own blog :) you and your daughter look lovely together and no, you don't look like you're her mother, more like a big sister! Please take more pictures like these, love to see the outfits on you.

The boyfriend jeans are a success! Love how relaxed it looks on you and yet not too baggy.

  13. You look so lovely Marlene, and your friendly and kind heart exudes from the pics! From someone else who's camera shy I totally understand why you don't feel the need to do OOTD posts regularly! I love your blog either way, you write beautifully and your photos are amazing :) x x

    1. Parveen, I'm so touched by what you've said here. Thank you! I'm still very camera shy and I prefer to stay behind the lens.

  14. It's so wonderful to see pictures of you!! You look barely past 30 (not that 40 is bad at all mind you)! :) Love how you paired the yellow sandals with the neutrals. The hat, too! And I am jealous that L wears such fashionable childrens clothes. PB is the best for children's clothing.

Please keep posting your pictures. I love to see a face with the person I've come to know through thier writing. (This said from the most camera shy person on earth)

    1. Maria, I figured it's time to show the face behind the writing. ((hugs)) What a lovely thing to say! 30! Aww.....I'm going to be on cloud 9 for the rest of the day. Love PB clothes particularly when they're 50% off :)

  15. I think you don't look like soon 40 at all, I really wish that I will look as good in ten years! I've been following your wonderful blog for a while now, but somehow never commented, I really don't know why. Anyway, I really enjoy reading what you are doing here, and the idea with buying a pair of seven for all mankind and making them to your personal perfect boyfriend jeans is just great!
And I can just repeat, what all above me already said: I really enjoyed this post and seeing your face. But don't feel forced to post photos of yourself, I think everyone should post on his blog what you feel good, and not what some possible readers would like to see! I'll stay a regular reader anyway ;-)

  16. Marlene, it's so absolutely awesome getting to see your beautiful face on the blog! You and Lil L makes such a stylish mother and daughter duo! :) I know you'd been wanting some boyfriend jeans for a while, so I'm happy you came up with a solution that worked for you and how cool that you found them for a great price! They look awesome on you and love how you styled them!! Once again, I'm so happy you gave us the opportunity to see you! Yay! :)

  17. Thanks so much for your comment on my blog and you even followed me too, that so nice ;-) I'm so happy you liked my blog too! And I'm looking forward to read your next post ;-)
No, the pants are from last year, but they'll certainly have a similar pair of pants this autumn/winter and the color burgundy will for sure be everywhere in the shops! So I'm sure that if you have a little look around at zara, jcrew or gap, you'll certainly find something - or maybe you make a good purchase on ebay again!

  18. Its so nice to put a face to the name/blog! You are gorgeous (and don't look anywhere even close to 40 at all!) & Little L is adorable, you make such a cute duo! :)
Totally agree with you on the jeans, I hate buying expensive ones, it's pointless to me as they never seem to fit any better than the cheaper options! I'm mostly a skinny jeans girl too, but have been craving a comfier boyfriend style for a while now too. You did a great job on the DIY & I love the way you styled them, especially with that striped jumper.

  24. I suppose by this point I need not tell you that you look lovely, but for the record, you do. I can totally relate to this story and this supports my theory that no one actually needs to buy boyfriend jeans, we just need to find pairs that don't fit too well and adjust them minimally, since they're meant to look awkward anyway. I have a pair of straight leg jeans that began life fitted but then stretched a size up and can now be referred to as "boyfriend", with the cuffed rolled up. Another pair is a cheap pair of straight-leg Seven jeans I found at 80 per cent off that is once size larger than my usual, and all I did was taper the ankle slightly myself.

  29. Oh I love seeing you for the first time - you look so comfy and yet so chic in your jeans and bottle green utility jacket - love that outfit and your definitely need to post more pics of youself. I need something like those jeans, I know what you mean, sometimes I can't face my skinny jeans and I need to pull on something more roomy. Imperative that you make a field trip over here - its jean central at all prices.

  30. You are beautiful!! Love love love love love love the jeans!!! And I do not see any wrinkles of any kinda and I have four eyes!

  31. Oo Marlene, it's so nice to finally see you !!! To put a face on a name is great ! And you look great with these jeans and you little mini-me :)) I have the same jeans and I love them, in fact I'm wearing them as we speak, I can't manage to get them off ! xxx

  34. Hello beautiful lady! You look really good in those jeans. I actually tried those on before but I didn't quite look as cool as you do.

  35. you pull off the boyfriend jeans very, very well. they call for such a casual, laidback look and you totally did justice to them with your outfits! and without reading that last paragraph, I really could not have believed you were 40. actually, I still can't believe it haha!

  36. Loved you post your picture. You look beautiful, elegant and stylish (I'd already guessed that you're a very stylish lady from your posts). I honestly would say you're no older than 30. xx

  37. Back from hols myself and jolted into making a rare comment with an unexpected but avidly appreciated appearance of the Real Marlene: you are so much better looking than ever anticipated!!

It helps slightly less for one already over 40 to now know you are both stylish and beautiful, rather than than simply beautifully stylish.

Love the jeans, the can-do-it and the photographs, I've said before, are some of the best blog shots around.

    1. nycbagfiend, it's daunting to reveal the face on TPF because there are too many anonymous readers. LOL! I bet if you look at my face close enough, you'll see a wrinkle or two.
