Bento Box

Monday, 1 November 2010
After two weeks of having school dinners, Little L announced that she no longer wished to eat anything the dinner lady served. I'm still adjusting to their choice of word because to me, dinner is a meal eaten in the evening. Anyway, going back to the topic of my little rascal who decided that a broccolli that looks grey instead of green is inedible. I guess I'll have to agree with her. So.....this means it's back to packing lunch for her every morning which was something I was glad NOT do when she started primary school.

Call me an anal mom but I never grew up eating ham or sausage rolls, both of which contain preservatives so I'm reluctant to offer her these for lunch. Neither she nor I are big fans of sandwiches. Lately, I've been filling her lunch box with fried rice or fried noodles, edamame beans, sliced fruit and a few jelly babies thrown in as motivation to finish everything I'd packed. However, I'm running out of ideas so it was good luck on my part that I came across this book - Yum-Yum Bento Box: Fresh Recipes for Adorable Lunches by Maki Ogawa and Crystal Watanabe. It's packed with great ideas with very attractive bento lunches for kids. I've ordered my copy from Amazon and I can't wait till it arrives.

  1. The book's amazing... to look at. Making the sushi or bentos seemed like it would've taken days per meal!

  2. Fingers crossed it won't take me hours to make the bentos. I flipped through it and was impressed. The authors are certainly beyond creative.
