3 Best Bargains

Friday 18 January 2013
I was in hysterics reading your confessions or should I say incredibly "original" excuses about the size of your shoe collection. It seems to me that only expensive shoes are included in the total count. Just in case if you're wondering what happened to the Pass It Forward series, I decided to jazz it up a bit today and have some fun. I've probably inundated you with enough new blogs and e-magazines to read so I thought I'd give you guys a break for a change.

I've always loved a good bargain. I've been rather fortunate to get incredible deals over the years. Unfortunately, I didn't bother taking photos and some of the least used items were recycled (given away or sold) to make way for new goodies. This included a Chanel 2.55 flap in pristine condition that I'd mentioned here on a couple of occasions. I'd nabbed it while I was in Hong Kong shopping with my friend S of Latkes and Dim Sum about 8 years or so ago. I hemmed and hawed over the "difficult" decision until S threatened to skewer me. It had cost me an equivalent of £135 in those days. Hard to believe the very same bag now retails for more than £3000!

Many many years ago, I came across a new Hermes Kelly 25cm at a consignment store. The owner of the handbag was going through a mid life crisis and dumped her Hermes collection which was enough to fill an entire store. I was rather obsessed with the chevre mysore leather (goatskin) and picked up the Kelly for £1500. Yes, I kid you not (pun intended). I loved the bag even if it was one of the most impractical item I've ever owned. I'm one of those individuals that lug around a bag large enough to put a baby in it. I finally sold it last year to get a much bigger bag but the Kelly still tugs at my heartstrings.

I think one of the best ways to try out a bag is to buy it secondhand. I spent the better part of a year researching for a Chanel medallion tote on the Purse Forum. I snagged one at a local New Zealand auction site for a mere £100 because the photos were so awful and the bag looked like it had been dragged in the mud. It took an hour to sanitize, remove dog/human hair/dirt and polish the bag (which was rather therapeutic). It was enough to convince me that the Chanel caviar leather was incredibly durable because the spa treatment revived it and made the bag look like new. Unfortunately, I've also learned that narrow shoulders don't go hand in hand with double straps.

What are your best bargains to date?

  1. None! But I have got to get a Kelly, I've started saving but yep it's an obscene amount to spend on bag, oh for a second hander!

  2. You have been incredibly lucky!!!! I know what you mean about the double straps - I find them difficult even with extra wide shoulders.
I suppose my luckiest finds have to be my Hermes Vasco in black crocodile for a few hundred £s last year and the pink alligator Christian Dior sling backs for much less. Both are in barely used condition. The 3rd item would be my mother's Kelly 32 in Vache Naturel from 2001 with all the original accessories.

  3. I envy you for all those bargains. I've yet to score one like that. Most of my bags are bought on sale and/or with a coupon or they're second hand in mint condition. Even then, nothing as great a bargain as yours! Lucky duck!

Now, I'm hunting for a Kelly!

  4. Wow, amazing deals. I have yet to score any H items for a steal, maybe some day. My best deal is a Chanel reissue camera bag in large size that I happened to stumbled upon at a department store. It was brand new in box and everything for 60% off. I almost had a heart attack since I almost bought the bag at full price 4 months earlier, but I opted for a classic flap instead.

    1. WHOA!! 60% off?! I've always wanted a Chanel reissue camera bag but the price tag gave me a mini heart attack. That's an incredible score!

  5. Those are sone truly incredible scores! I can't believe you even hesitated on the Chanel 2.55. I'm not much a bag person but my greatest bargain was a black silk Gucci pencil skirt that I got for just $30 after a ton of markdowns. And I used a gift card to but it so it was essentially free :)

    Have a great weekend!

  6. That NZ CC bag story is hilarious - what had that previous owner been doing with that bag. Doing those extreme races? The orange Kelly is a stunna - but around here in Oakland (and we're perilously close to Berkeley, the land of earth shoes) there would be nowhere to take it on a field trip.

  7. I've been cleaning my bags for 6 years now. To be perfectly honest, I haven't been completely happy with the spa treatments my Chanel or Hermes bags received despite paying a small fortune. I'm very hesitant to work on lambskin but with caviar leather, I normally just use Apple cleaning and conditioning lotions.

I also use Simple (no fragrance/alcohol) baby wipes to wipe down the interior and exterior. I use a toothpick and work along the edges of the seams of the pockets to get rid of dust/dirt. Sometimes I use small patches of baby wipes and push it along with a toothpick to pick up tiny little particles in the pockets if cotton buds don't do the trick. If need be, I also vacuum the insides of the bag.

  8. Hi my dear! Love your gorgeous bags and the stories tied to them-it's amazing how less than 10 years ago that designer bags really could be picked up for so little funds. My 90s black Chanel bag was a bargain for just under £250 about 4 years ago and my best ever charity shop find was about 6 years ago, a deadstock immaculate Ossie Clark dress for £6.50. I've also found countless authentic Gucci bags at the boot sales and I've also a gorgeous Dior clutch which was just £5 xxx

  9. Love this! I think my best bargain was the black Balenciaga First bag for $250!

  10. My best bargain ever is my Balenciaga leather jacket I bought pre-loved at about $1000 dollars with shipping. This is the catch- she was less than a year old when I bought her! That said, I have more of a not so clever purchases than good bargain like most of my Chanel bags I hardly used like the 2.55 patent and GSTs that are so not me! Wish I could trade the Chanels for Bals instead, at least I would use Bal more, definitely.

  11. I've definitely had some bargains in the past, but more recent ones include buying a $450+ Lover dress for $11.50, and getting a pair of once worn Chloe susans for approximately 1/3 retail price... The things we do to justify a purchase LOL

  12. Incredibly envious here, bargin bag hunting is a skill I've yet to master. Do share your secrets with the rest of us. I love your collection, each one is such a classic. Cannot believe you got rid of your Chanel 2.55 though tsk tsk.

    1. Jenee, I must've used that 2.55 a grand total of 3 times in all the years that I'd kept it. I probably spent more time admiring the bag! At least I figured out that while I still adore the classic Chanel flap, it doesn't suit my lifestyle.

  13. i love the idea of having one of these classics but i doubt i'd get much use out of these at all. mostly because they are so 'precious' and i'm such a tomboy with my daily bags.. great idea buying it secondhand marlene but my biggest worry is that they are counterfeit and i've seen some amazing ones! upcoming post perhaps? this seems your expertise ;)

  14. I cannot believe you got that Kelly for such a steal - I'd have a really hard time letting go if it too! Amazing.

  15. That Kelly looks jaw dropping! I am a complete klutz when it comes to taking care of my bags as i tend to carry them until they fall into pieces. My best bargain so far would have to be my Guess wristwatch that i got for less than half price over 6 years ago

Thanks for your comment on my guest post at Vanisha's

  16. Chanel bags will forever be on my wish list! I can't believe you bought the Hermes bag for such a low price! How lucky! xx

  17. I recently went into a second hand store and found amazing designer purses, always a great steal!

  18. You lucky, lucky thing! I love your style as well. I lived in London for a few months and was super bummed I didn't find any good consigment stores - I never knew where to look!
Do you have any consignment store suggestions? If I got a Kelly of any sort, I would be elated!
