Cultivating A Uniform

The Basics

Though I'm no clotheshorse and shopping in large stores scare the heck out of me, I'm vain enough to admit that I want to look fairly decent when I walk out of my front door. When I'm at home....... Well....that's a different matter. Let's not get into that because I don't want to scare you. Anyhow, let's start with my blank canvas aka a t-shirt and a pair of jeans befitting my casual lifestyle.

Winter Outfit

Through trial and error, I've slowly cultivated a daily uniform around a few staple pieces. This would be my t-shirt and jeans with a rotation of various jackets depending on the weather and my mood.

 Autumn Outfit

My hubby was gobsmacked when he opened my closet the other day. "Is this all you've got?," he asked looking rather shocked. Yup. That's it. I share my closet space with Lil L too. It just goes to show how many outfits one can still create despite a miniscule wardrobe. What is your uniform?

  1. You have wonderful basic pieces! Things I have to have are skinny denim, black blazer and a button down. . . you can make so many different outfits just having these things.

    1. You're absolutely right, Jen. I've made enough mistakes spending £££ on one off tops or dresses when I should stock up on basics.

  2. Absolutely love every thing here. Can you be my stylist? :P That summer outfit is my fave and every time I see that Bator jacket, I think about how well it'd fit in my wardrobe!

    1. Alice, you're too kind :) I'm a terrible stylist. I can dress myself but anyone else...it'll probably end up a disaster. I love your style. I wouldn't change a thing about you.

  3. Love it! All hail the uniform! Mine is a loose tee (usually James Perse or JCrew), skinny jeans and either a cardigan or blazer/ jacket and maybe a scarf. For shoes, either ballet flats or an ankle or tall boot. Occasionally, I throw on a little dress or a tunic with leggings. But my uniform is usually denim driven. :)

    1. Gosh, I don't envy you. I detest shoe shopping because I have to trawl through hundreds before finding a pair that fits well. Hope you managed to find something you like. Comfort is the key.

  7. I love your wardrobe. I have a uniform too and it looks a lot like yours (but your jackets! they are TDF!), but because I have an office job, I substitute the jeans for black trousers. Love your Chanel jacket. Good post!

    1. I-Ping, ever since I stopped work, I replaced my black pants for jeans! Oh, the tailored shirts for t-shirts but everything else remain the same.

  8. My uniform is just that! Right this moment, the putfit I would like to wear most would be the Spring combination with the beautiful, beautiful Chanel jacket and those nude shoes!
    Wonderful collection!

    1. I can't wear wait for Spring so that I can start wearing the Chanel jacket and finally break out the wedges. I don't think one can go wrong with a Chanel ;P

  10. Hubby's reaction to my closet(s) is total the opposite: YOU HAVE ALL THIS AND YOU STILL HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR?!?!!!!!!!!!!!!? is a much more common exclamation in our house. :))
Though if I had that chanel jacket of yours, it'd probably end up being a summer, spring, fall, and winter staple.

    1. Hahahah....I actually had nothing that I could mix and match with ease previously. I did an entire wardrobe overhaul when I got to the UK. You can't believe the sheer number of clothes I chucked out. Now I'm just paranoid about willy nilly adding to my wardrobe unless the piece goes with the rest of my clothes. As for the Chanel, I love the workmanship and the fact that I could pass it to Lil L when she's old enough to appreciate it.

  11. Looking at your wardrobe puts me to shame. I like every outfit you put together, they are grown up, chic and sophisticated. That first resemble reminds me so much of what i wear at home..haha.

    1. Nelah, what a sweet thing to say! Hahaha....my at-home-outfit looks even worse than the "blank canvas" seen in the first photo. Think Juicy Couture. Yup!

  12. I love how you have filled your closet with only a small amount of pieces that all go together wonderfully. It's very inspiring. You also always seem to have the most PERFECT jackets. I have yet to see one I don't like. I think this may be key in how wonderful your outfits always look. The H doesn't hurt either! ;)

Hmmm... my uniform? I live in a warm climate with little to no winter but l LOVE winter clothes. (sob). I have bought a few key jackets/boots this season but only those I adore and will have forever. Some from Ebay but a lot at full retail - which is so NOT me! I'm working on it.

So, if we're speaking of a uniform, I would have to mention my warm weather uniform. I love throw-on tank dresses in simple fabrics and solid, neutral colors - my faves being Alexander Wang, Eileen Fisher and - gah (hides head in embarrassment) - Garnet Hill (which makes great inexpensive ones you can wash and wear) I'll throw on Havianas (have them in every color/metallic you can think of) if I'm casual, or Prada platforms, clogs (love love love my Rick Owens clogs in black and greige - they make Garnet Hill look chic! haha) or wedges if I want to dress it up. Heels almost never. I may get adventurous this summer and try my Dickers or Dixies with a dress but I dunno....

I throw on a 3/4 sleeve cotton cardi (almost always J Crew) in a bright color if it's not sweltering. Accessories/jewelry is where I can have fun and look fashionable. Something Hermes always whether a bag or bracelet.

    1. I think we need to do a house swap. I've almost forgotten what it's like to not peel layers off like an onion whenever I'm trying on clothes. It's going to get colder this week so Havaianas and silk dresses are just a figment of my imagination.

  13. hah-- you won't want to know what i wear around the house...i'm so tempted to just throw out all my ratty sweats and shapeless pjs but that just seems so sayang to waste them all....my grandmother's compulsion to not waste is in battle with my want to look decent at all timeS!

    1. Whaddaya mean?! That's what I wear at home. Juicy Couture tracksuits! They're ratty with threadbare bottoms....okay, too much information.

  14. I like these how these outfits are simple yet chic. I was recently told by my friends that I wear a a uniform of striped shirts, skinny jeans, flats and blazers so I totally feel you. Hey it's the basics and they look good. I've been making more of an effort to swap out some of my tees for printed silk tops instead but I'm not budging on the rest for now :)

  15. This is fantastic Marlene! That's what I'm hoping to get to... a well edited closet and ACTUAL style!! I love each of these looks and how they can be so different even with the same foundation.

  16. this is very similar to my "uniform". my go-to outfit is usually my denim flares + tee or tank + blazer + super high heels. great trench and boots in the last set.

  18. I love your everyday looks, mine also involves skinny jeans and jackets and boots although I need to wear my blazers more! My wardrobe has way too much stuff, most is old stuff that I really should just get rid of! x

  19. And they are all amazingly BEAUTIFUL!!! If I shared a closet, the other person's clothes would get lost. HAHAHAHA

  20. Geez, once again, I'm really inspired. My uniforms are so similar to those you've posted here! I'm drooling over the Bator jacket, and I must venture to try something like that adorable straw hat come spring. Your taste, from my pov, is just flawless.

  21. I'm definitely in a phase of wardrobe purge right now in order to cultivate my own uniforms. I've been trying to avoid making shopping decisions on a whim and actually spending a little more for investment or staple pieces. Your seasonal uniforms have a true classic quality to them. Simple and chic for sure.
