Interview with Kylie Malcolm

Tuesday 6 December 2011
I'd like to introduce all of you to my friend, Kylie Malcolm. Our kids are schoolmates so inevitably the moms get  to know one another as well. There's a small pool of foreigners here in our little town and words get passed around pretty fast when a newbie arrives. She was a hairstylist to all the top models in her previous life and is now an up and coming fashion designer. She has kindly allowed me to access her private photo collections which I'm sure will make you all squeal with delight. Kylie can also be contacted on kylie@kyliemalcolm.co.uk regarding any inquiries about her designs.

 1. Who are you and where are you from?
I'm Kylie Malcolm. I grew up in Australia and now live in the beautiful English countryside.

2. You had an amazing career as a hairstylist. What would say your normal work day was like?
I did Kylie Minogue's hair at the Aveda salon before I became a freelance hairstylist. I used to catch the first Eurostar to Paris from Waterloo and arrive very early and go straight to a studio for a French magazine. Everyday was exciting and so different.

Sometimes I'll do a music video shoot. I've done Rachel Steven's hair. Towards the end, I did more celebrities' hair as well as male actors such as Dougray Scott, Guy Ritchie, Richard Ashcroft. I went Iceland with Tatler magazine. I've been to Mexico with Evening Standard magazine. With M&S, I went to Texas and Miami. I went to Spain for NY Times. No two days are the same.

4. What was your most memorable shoot?
The shoot with Eva Herzigova in Paris in  2001/2002 who's a real sweetheart. She's very kind and really easy to work with. Doing Gisele Bundchen's hair for the front cover and beauty story of Nova January-2001

5. How did you get into that line of work?

I worked for Aveda in Harvey Nichols Knightsbridge as a hairdresser and meet  Eugene Souleiman. I started to assist him on photo shoots, shows ect and before I know it I was his first assistant for 4 years and loved it. I worked very hard but it was thoroughly rewarding.
