BeckSøndergaard Scarves

The scarf is an accessory that I wear all year round. I have a lighter and looser weave for the hotter months and cashmere scarves for fall and winter. I keep one handy in my bag when I'm out the entire day because the weather here in the UK is so unpredictable. Say what you want about the airline blankets but I'd much rather use my own (aka my scarf) on the plane.

I'm a scarf snob. There, I've said it. There's no doubt that Loro Piana and Hermes make some of the most luxurious cashmere scarves in the world. I consider my Hermes shawl a work of art albeit one that hangs on my neck but it's getting harder and harder for me to justify forking out £770. Yes. For. One. Shawl. My finger trembled as I pressed the purchase button on the Hermes website years ago. My first Hermes shawl cost me £660. But the price of a Hermes shawl has increased faster than inflation despite the downturn of the economy. Hence, it was time for me to look for more affordable alternatives.

I stumbled upon BeckSøndergaard scarves at a store last week when I was out window shopping and promptly fell in love with them. I'm rather sensitive to wool particularly around my neck but I was thrilled to find a large selection of prints and various blends of fabrics. The 100% cotton scarves cost a mere £25 and on the other end of the scale, wool/silk mix ones are priced at a very affordable £85. These creations are the brainchild of Anna Søndergaard and Lis Beck, two Danish based in Copenhagen who founded the brand in 2003. You can view the rest of their collection here.

  1. These prints are pretty!
I love scarves and shawls, and after my time in India, I am not sure I will ever be comfortable spending hundreds of pounds on scarves abroad, given the astonishing variety (at reasonable prices) of wool, cashmere, handwoven scarves available here.
That said, I think Tsumori Chisato makes some gorgeous pieces. I own one of her striped pink-blue-white shawls and wear it often. It's a little more expensive than the pieces you have featured but pretty good value for money given the uniqueness of her dyes and prints.

  2. Some lovely picks. My shadow scarf which I bought earlier this year is a Becksondergaard one and I love the print and the lavender shade on it. Some of them can be on the pricier side but I have to say that the only time I went in to TK Maxx this year - they were selling their scarves for £9.99. Now you can't beat that bargain even with a big stick.

  8. I'm a year-round scarf wearer too! In summer, I find I still need one in my bag when we are in cold, air conditioned restaurants or movies. I too can't wear wool around my neck so seek out non-irritating fabrics. I have started to seek out only infinity scarves now as I like that there are no ends for me to tie and get in the way when I'm doing things. x

  9. These scarves look great! I can't do without a scarf either with the cold weather here in Holland, so I also carry a scarf with me most of the time.

  13. I dont wear scarves enough but just cant resist buying them, if that makes any sense..ha. I adore scarves in general and how creative some ladies can be with scarf styling. Hermes scarves are so beautiful and luxurious, i am too afraid to wear them and drop food or spill my drink over.

  14. What fun prints! I love scarves and shawls year around. I find that they're such a nice way to add a bit of unexpected color. I love solids so that's also how I add in a print (gasp!). Hermes and Loro Piana are favorite splurges, but I love collecting scarves when I travel. I make sure to pick one up on each trip- especially when traveling to places with beautiful textiles, dyes and handwoven details. A good friend designs textiles and has come up with such beautiful colorways that are personal and special to me.

Do you have any opinion on the Mercy Delta scarves? There are a couple on sale on the website that look rather nice.

  19. Hi Marlene,

Did you buy any of the scarves? Like you I am sensitive to wool around my neck so wondered what the scarves made of fifty/fifty wool and silk were like?
