Hair loss recovery & Hair products that rock

While I like to talk about all things beautiful on this blog, we know life isn't quite like that. Every now and then, I'll inject a healthy dose of reality into my posts. I wrote about my battle with hair loss in February 2013. It was a relief to hear that I wasn't alone. It can be difficult for those around you to understand. Only a few took me seriously. I was appalled after going to the toilet at a friend's house only to find clumps of hair on her floor after I've washed my hands. Or strands of hair falling onto friends' arms, laps or their food when we went out for coffee. After a few mishaps, I had to be extra careful when preparing meals. I was hoovering every other day too. Some of the "comforting words" I'd received were:

hey....at least you're alive...it's not like a life threatening disease
I think you're being too sensitive. You're over-reacting. Come on......
It's not that bad......you've got plenty of hair anyway

To the two individuals who uttered the first sentence......please excuse me while I yank out your hair in various parts of your scalp and donate it to individuals who need it....seeing that you don't mind losing yours. Yes, I'm V-A-I-N. I like hair on my head and eyebrows above my eyes.

I was lucky to act really quick when hair loss sped up. It's been nearly 20 months since the first two photos were taken and boy, how things have changed. I haven't shown these pictures to anyone other than 2 individuals but seeing how little visible evidence regarding recovery from hair loss are out there, I figure why not.........

NOW

Nov 2014

I have lots of itty bitty hair everywhere which is a welcoming sight. The exposed top part of my scalp doesn't look like a light beacon which shines in the dark. For the first time in my life, I was pleased to see grey hair..... (this may come back and bite me in my ass). Now that hair growth is back on track, I need a shampoo that can put moisture back and tame my frizzy mane. You know I'm rather anal about natural products. I've tried many. M-A-N-Y. They left residue on my hair and my scalp became increasingly irritated and greasy.

None worked until I finally tried Apivita haircare range. They're not 100% natural. I think the blurb on the shampoo states 88% natural. Whatever. It works. I no longer have itchy scalp and there's bounce in my hair. It's a shame that not many stores stock the Apivita range. I've finished an entire bottle of Apivita Propoline Shampoo for dry/dehydrated hair. I love love love the Apivita Shine & Revitalising Hair conditioner (mask). It kicks ass. It's that good. It adds lots of shine into my hair despite the fact that I rarely style or blow-dry it. The Apivita haircare products aren't cheap but they're bloody awesome (sorry, language deteriorating here due to hunger). If you want to save a few pennies, pin down friends who're going to Greece and bribe them to bring you back some. Otherwise, if you're like me, you'll just have to cough up the extra pennies. I've just tried out Farmaline which stocks a wide range of Apivita products. So far so good and they're far cheaper than most online stores out there. Do check them out here.

I've tried the famed Moroccanoil which is fab. I've switched to the cheaper but equally awesome Redken Argan oil  and my hair really couldn't tell the difference between the two. They both produce shiny tresses which I could flip about like those models in hair commercials.

  1. I'm really happy for you. It's great to hear that you found a range of products that seem to be working for you. I remember having read your initial post in 2013. In my family there are quite a few people suffering from hair loss and I can only imagine the impact it must have. I don't suffer from hairloss but I have gone through a very long period of having a very itchy scalp until finally I met a lady in an organic grocery store who recommended a product range that I now absolutely love.

    1. Thank you ever so much for the kind words. Which product range is that, Anna? I'd love to know.

  2. It's not vanity to be upset about hairloss, it is a distressing condition. I'm glad it's getting better. Did it just happen to grow back or did you use something? You look lovely, whatever!

    1. Thank you! That's really kind of you to say that. After a huge battle with various GPs, I'm glad I pressed on and did my own research. It was a combination of my beta blocker hypertension meds and very low iron levels that did me in. I changed my medication but it took 3 months for it to be completely flushed out of my system. I was put on a high iron diet for 6 months - meaning lots of red meat and liver (blech!) as well as iron supplements. It took 3 months for enough iron to be absorbed into my body..... I'm still taking iron supplements these days but the hair growth has been incredible since late last year.

  3. So happy you've found products that are helping but just wanted to pass on that I've found some shampoo bars help minimize hair fall as well. Of course, stick with what works for you...I just wanted to mention this in case it might help others :)

    1. Do share the info about shampoo bars if you don't mind. I'm sure there will be many who will find it useful.

  4. Ah I hear you as I am still suffering from hair loss! Not so much as before but as I age mine is much thinner than before.
People who says nasty comments about women with hair loss are well sorry stupid people (I am sure there are other words that we could use but unfortunately my english is not THAT good...). I have been losing hair since my twenties: as I had PLENTY, no, I am not bald! I am happy you could find a solution for your's. Things got somewhat better when I started using organics cosmetics then henna and ayurvedic powders. And eating better as well. And trying to get a grip on my stress and nerves (yes I am a very nervous person although I do my best not to show it too much). Following your first post back in 2013, I bought the shampoo you recommended but stopped doing so as I decided that I could find same stuff within France or even Europe. But this shampoo did great for my hair while I used it.
I am glad you are happy with your hair now, it was a difficult moment to live I know.

    1. I'm so pleased you found a solution to yours. The worst thing is if you have absolutely no idea what caused the hair loss and it's getting worse and worse by the day.

  5. so glad you managed to pinpoint your problem! apivita is great, i discovered them when i was in greece and happily found that a limited range is available down under.

btw i am not sure if you've heard of nioxin... it's a brand targeted at thinning hair. i thankfully don't have this problem but my hairdresser recommended using their conditioner as it's a bit tingly and rejuvenates the scalp and keeps it happy. i've been using it over the past decade or so, once or twice a week and it's amazing. it's not the cheapest but i use it as a supplement. i have friends who use the whole system and swear by it!

  6. Very informative post, and I am glad to hear that your hair is recovering. I would be frantic if mine started falling out. It's bad enough that the texture changes as you age.

Thanks for the tip on the Redken oil. Am definitely going to get some. Does it help with any tangling?

    1. I find the Apivita conditioner/mask helps with the detangling. The Redken oil gives it extra shine. Using both helps with taming my frizz.

  7. Nice! At least you stacked those in your arsenal. That should benefit you well in the long run. There will always be a classification of methods of fixing damage and getting what is lost back. Your hair should be better off from this point. Thanks for sharing! All the best!

  8. Thank you for sharing all of this. Big hugs from a fellow sufferer here. Hang in there with the supplements and the oils. I also really like peppermint and tea tree oils to keep the scalp healthy once the regrowth process has started.

    1. Thanks, Fen! You're a sweetheart. I could barely see the light at the end of the tunnel early last year. I can't believe the change 1.5 year makes.

  10. Hair loss is such a tough break. Glad that you're pushing to arrest the problem, though. A lot of methods, agencies and clinics are on the ready to ensure that it wouldn't be such a continuing problem. Best of luck in all your efforts in dealing with that.

  11. Hello there!
I discovered your blog today (love it!) and as I was reading your older posts I came across this one. I don't know if you are still using the Apivita products but still, I wanted to share a tip with you:
I am from Greece and as you can imagine Apivita is sold everywhere here, both in bigger stores but also in almost every pharmacy. The prices are about half of what I saw in the links you mentioned. However, most pharmacies have online stores as well and their prices are even lower than in-store. Some of them offer international delivery so it might be worth checking out as the prices are incredibly low. For example, check out this link: http://www.pharmacydepot.gr/AdvancedSearch.php?Language=en&queryString=apivita+shampoo
    Hope it helps!

    xx

    1. Thanks, Christina for the tips! I've bought from these guys before but it's only worthwhile if I place a big order. The shipping cost is a killer if I'm only buying a couple of products :(
