Sunbathing

So.........this was my first ever attempt at sunbathing in my entire life. Yes.....I'm a typical Asian in that sense. It's day 3 here in Athens in oppressive 36˚C heat so my friend, Heather decided we should spend the day by the beach. Both her and her husband were aghast to hear that 1) I've never sunbathed  2)  I've never owned a bikini nor tried one on. I was one of very few fully clothed individuals on the beach with the palest skin around..........

Never mind that I came home with a semi oval shaped rosy red shade on my chest (tip to self: remember to re-apply sunscreen) and additional freckles sprinkled liberally across my now slightly tanned face. Heather has decided that we're going bikini shopping tomorrow. For me. *gulp* I've decided that lying still without twitching and fidgeting when it's not bed-time isn't something I do well or enjoy.

We stopped by Melissinos, the famed poet sandal maker of Athens yesterday. It's a necessary pit stop that every tourist make after the Acropolis. I was here nearly 17 years ago and met the current sandal maker's father who has since retired from the business. Was it that long ago when I was in my 20s.....?????! We both left with a pair of "Maria Callas" sandals for €30 each.

Despite every attempt to be good and not over-eat, we've been stuffing our faces with copious amount of freddo cappuccino, loukoumades, donuts the size of my face, saganaki, fried eggplant, fried anchovies, fried zucchini (noticing a pattern here with all things fried?).....etc?

  1. Beautiful photos, as always. The older I get, the better I seem to get at sunbathing! Maybe I'm just lazier than I used to be when I couldn't sit still for more than a few minutes before! Happy bikini shopping! Lynne x

  2. You need this moment of rest - ease yourself into it! I note that L has no such issue with kicking back & having a beach day! She looks v chilled there. Enjoy the bikini shopping & be sure to take lots of photos now!! ;) x

  4. Bikini shopping. Shudder .... but good luck if you're up for it! My bikini days are long gone though to be honest they only lasted 2 holidays and that was definitely pre-children. And yes like you - I can't sit still in the sun ... what's that all about? I have to say, I have got a tan though - all those hours this year I've spent watching cricket - I'm now as brown as a button though unwillingly and unwittingly!

    1. Gosh, you tan easily then, Sue. I'm not sure if I'm cut out for sunbathing even if I was under the shade. I would've burned to a crisp if I was doing it properly. It was hot with next to zero breeze.

  8. That's another reason you look younger than your age - no sunbathing - no sun damaged skin! Good luck with the bikini shopping, x

    1. hahaha.....perhaps I'm vain enough to say that one experience was enough. I'd like to preserve my skin for the next decade or so.

  9. Lucky you Marlene! The sandals are very nice and I love the little red cover-up under the umbrella though not sure if it's L's or your's. :) Athens is sooo hot in summer..... the beach must be perfect. Enjoy!

  10. Kareema, your tips about caring for the skin will be so handy! Do tell more if you have the time. I'm with you about the headache. I think one experience is enough. I don't think sunbathing is really my kind of thing.

  11. I'm not a sunbather, either (no thanks to trying to lie still in a puddle of sweat, urgh) but I do love the sea. I prefer to get out earlier in the day when it's not as hot, and just walk on the beach...I can walk for hours, it is so relaxing!
    Enjoy your trip!
