Sample Sale & Reiss press day

Attempting London when you've got a 3 hour door to door return journey sandwiched between school runs is like running an obstacle race. Dodging people left, right and center, racing up and down steep escalators, changing various tubes......and trying to get to your appointment without looking like you'd just completed .......... an obstacle race.

I rarely go to sample sales because I get vertigo just looking at the crowds and the dizzying array of clothes, all jammed together in a claustrophobic space. BUT.....I thought I'd check out Joseph sample sale held at the Music Room, located a few footsteps from South Molton St. There were a handful of Isabel Marant hawaiian shirts discounted from £800ish to £100 and skirts, also from the mainline collection reduced to £65. Alas, there was nothing in my size that caught my eye.

Next stop - Reiss press day. Their vast A/W collection blew me away. The pieces were a radical shift from the pastel and more classic S/S 14 pieces. On trend, contemporary and striking. There was the leopard print on calfskin hair, the exquisite lace top, a good selection of party dresses including the elegant evening gown with beautiful strip panels on the back AND there's even a piece of fabric to hide your bra. Brilliant.

The collection included a line for the younger market with a quilted asymmetrical biker jacket that has my name written all over it, another which is a selection of their bestsellers over the years with Italian made jackets (absolutely in love with the workmanship after turning the garment inside out to look at the finishing). I saw a dramatic dual toned textured sweatshirt which would look perfect, simply paired with jeans and ankle boots. It's not often I walk away excited and utterly impressed. With a more affordable price tag, Reiss will give the high end designers a run for their money.

I figured if I ran fast enough, I could get to La Pâtisserie des Rêves and make it back to Waterloo station in time for the train. Surprisingly, I was able to stop to take a few photos of the charming Marylebone village.

Outfit: Isabel Marant Etoile utility jacket (similar here), Uniqlo striped top, Zara jeans, See by Chloe ankle strap sandals (similar here), Chanel caviar WOC and Hermes Cape Cod watch.

A quick obligatory OOTD that I'd manage to twist Lil L's arm to snap a picture. (cue plenty of eye rolling and smart ass comments from the her). My usual outfit that has plenty of pockets so I can carry tons of junk on my body.....and comfy shoes so I could run.....the obstacle race.

    1. Thanks, Fiona! That's really sweet of you. Slightly embarrassed as I didn't want to carry that monstrous camera of mine so resorted to taking pics using my smartphone instead.

    2. But even when you take pictures using your smartphone, they look ten times more artistic than mine when I use a phone! or camera for that matter.

  2. Ah you look good for a racer!!!
Joke apart, I recognize a utility jacket is very useful although I would not be able to wear it right now.
You just made me regret not being in London again now as I had my eyes on Reiss during my stay but thought the collection too middle aged business woman (sorry ladies, nothing negative here, I am nearly middle aged...). And I could not buy everything. There is Reiss in Paris also, actually I discovered the brand there before coming to London (I plan to travel again in October of November, good timing isn't it?)
I admire you to be able to jump to London and then manage to be on time to pick up your daughter at school, what a schedule (hence the race).
As for La Pâtisserie des rêves, well I should tell you that I am not a fan of Saint Honoré, because of the cream ; but the strawberry tart is another thing. I do like fruits in pâtisseries so am always on the hunt of nice and good ones. Here the tart is made using pâte feuilletée which is more difficult to bake (and more time consuming) than pâte sablée or pâte brisée: nevertheless all are very yummy!

    1. Actually, I was rather impressed with Saint-Honoré. It was pretty light but my absolute favorite is millefeuille.

    1. I'll need to check out Coco Momo. I'm always in a hurry when I'm in London and have walked past the cafe so many times.

  6. Check out Konditor and Cook next time you are at Waterloo. It's in Cornwall Road at the back of the station, It's the first of all their shops and they do have some very yummy cakes and brownies. Lots of filming is done round that area. You are brave to do that journey in such a short time. I think if it was me I would ask someone else to pick up my daughter from school so I could have more time.

  7. The new collection from Reiss sounds good. I quite often bypass it as I've always felt it a little too "work orientated" and fitted for my lifestyle and figure. But I will look out for the new season goodies - the jackets/coats look good.

    1. I was pleasantly surprised by the new collection. Like you, I thought the previous seasons have been more corporate-type work clothes and the dresses were too lady like for me but wow, they really ramped it up for A/W.

  8. The Reiss collections sounds nice - it's one of the higher end brands on the high street, do you think their quality is worth it? I've never tried any of their clothes, so I've always wondered. BTW, those patisserie confections look soooo yummy!!!

    1. I was seriously impressed with the workmanship. With coats and jackets, I ALWAYS check the lining and see the finishing because it shows whether the brand pays attention to details. I didn't realize that most of the outerwear pieces are made in Italy.

  9. I do love Reiss clothing! I love their mix of classic and chic meets modern yet feminine. The lace top looks so beautiful. I always adore your photos and you always share the yummiest looking food :)

Take care and enjoy your weekend,

  10. My goodness, that Reiss evening dress with slashed back is stunning although you would need more body confidence than I have to wear it. I could definitely see myself in the animal print jacket though. Susan, London

    1. Totally agree with you about the good figure but I love the animal print jacket. It's a statement piece but not overly trendy.

  11. Thank you for the nod about Reiss. It isn't a store that I frequent because I feel that it is a little too blank and business like for me. I am tempted to say 'sod the frocks let's just hit the strawberry tart' that photo looks so good. You are looking lovely for all your' racing about, picture perfect. H xx

  13. I have a lot of love for Reiss - some of my nicest coats and shoes have come from there over the years. We have a lot of love for Gaunts book shop as well Marlene - that shot is great! I recruit librarians in 'real life' and it's always somewhere we make a bee line for if we are in London and around Marylebone. I can leave my hubbie in there browsing for hours ... x
