My Holy Grail - Statement Mid Heel Sandals

Tuesday 6 May 2014

The quickest way to put me in a foul mood is..........shoe shopping.  Frustration rears its ugly head after the first hour. By the second hour, I'm better off being kept at a distance from fellow humans........ No, I'm not being polite or diplomatic. I'm stating the truth. Just ask the husband or child..........

Yup. The curse of being born with a size US 4 (EU 34/ UK 1) feet. Whatever that figure is converted internationally, my bloody feet are minuscule especially for my height. Imagine looking after a gaggle of 8 year olds and they wear the same shoe size as me. A 40 year old!  Pfffffffft. Spending more than a decade in a sport that required a lot of jumping and strange pirouettes brought about numerous ankle sprains so skinny unsteady heels are akin to death traps on my feet. Chuck in bunions and flat feet.....well, you've got a recipe for a disastrous shopping expedition.

See those metallic gunpowder bada$$ dramatic laser cut lace up sandals above (whew! What a mouthful)? They're M.I.N.E. My preciousssssssssss. They're my holy grail statement heels from Nicholas Kirkwood, shoe designer extraordinaire. And most importantly, check out those incredible triangular chunky mid heels that will ensure that I will never ever plunge headlong down any precipitous stairs.

I've drooled/fondled/ lusted after these darlings at Selfridges but sadly, the color white combined with the £975 price tag made me rather ill. Thankfully, there's The Outnet with a much reduced price of £390 (they're the most expensive shoes I've ever bought in my life).  I mean I've effectively "saved" £585. Yes....well....pretty insane rationale but hey ho, after 3 years of shoe searching, I'm elated to find a pair of statement mid heeled sandals in MY size.

p.s. A quick reminder - Nicholas Kirkwood shoes tend to run small so take the next size up particularly if you have wide feet.

  1. Very pretty! NK shoes look even better on than in pictures or on a shelf - there's just something about them. Sexy and comfortable at once - if that's possible. These were a very good splurge!

The shopping Gods were with my AmEx just now. I followed your link to Outnet and a pair of NK shoes I died to own about a year ago were there on sale - but already sold out in my size. Whew.....

    1. Mind you, I only stumbled upon this pair by accident when I was looking for an Isabel Marant top. I didn't even know they came in darker colors. You're right, they're definitely better looking on my feet. I know I sound like a broken record but it's just so rare that designers actually make statement shoes with a 2inch chunky heels. I don't see any this season which is a bit of a bummer....

  2. The only tears I shed are out of frustration in not being able to buy them all. I love shoe shopping but I guess a standard size 6 is much easier to cater for than a 1 (tiny, tiny feet). These are really unusual, I wasn't sure at first but I'm kind of really liking them. Perfect on your petite feet x

    1. I'd much rather have your size 6 feet than mine. At least you have plenty of choices! I shed tears of frustrations when I'm at a sale and there's NOTHING in my size :(

  4. Wow! Statement "mid heels"! I love the colour of them actually. I always prefer a dark metallic to a true black on a shoe as it's less harsh and more flattering on your feet and against the legs.

    Well done you :o)

    1. I didn't know that! I've never owned anything metallic so this is quite new on me. But you're right. they don't look as stark against my pale legs (gotta get some sun).

  7. Ahh indeed you make my life complicated! Those sandals are really beautiful and so very different and you nearly made me want to try them on... but in all honesty I would not know when exactly I could actually wear them in my everyday life. They do look comfortable despite that the sole seems so very thin. Speaking of shoes for tiny feet, I just recently bought a pair from Chie Mihara, in 35. But she does have some styles in 34 as well.
On another point, following last day post, I am now the proud owner of an All Saints leather jacket and very happy I took the splurge before coming back home (tomorrow). Well now, I am going to the Outnet...

    1. Oh thin soles kill me, I have sold so many of my shoes because of that.

    2. Actually, the sole is pretty well cushioned and the chunky heel stabilizes the sandal. I don't think I would've coped with a skinny kitten heel though.

  8. One more question though: are the shoes a true size 34 or rather an Italy size 34 (which means a french 35 which is not so small, I say!)

    1. They do run small. These ones are size 35 but they fit a size 34 feet.

  9. Oh I really need a modelling shot of those, I've realised that my clothes to be modernised with a hot shoe, come on pony up!

    1. Okie docs. Will try to schedule a modeling shot. Eeeeeks. My clothes are boring with a capital B so I definitely need something to jazz them up a bit.

  11. Very cool shoes, Marlene--yes, now we need them modeled, please :)

I feel you on the shoe shopping pains--with horrible bunions, flat wide feet, etc. I am almost always in trainers/flip-flops, as nothing else fits comfortably.

    1. You know what? Nearly every woman I've spoken to has had problems finding shoes. Bunions, flat feet, wide feet, too narrow, higher than normal arch. Goes to show...this is a universal problem.

  12. Oh myyy!! Marlene they are freaking amazing! Holy grail indeed! I thought I had shoe shopping problems due to my small shoe size but man, you certainly have it tough! A lot of money yes, money well spent, also yes :)

    Take care.

    2. What an unusual and interesting design, I hope they feel good. Historical note - you would have been lauded in pre communist China, no need for the foot binder!!

  13. I like shoes but shopping for them is such a chore so I rarely do it. Yikes. Size 2 feet! Poor thing.

  14. Congratulations! They are amazing and sounds like they are well deserved considering your hate for shoe shopping. Now let's see them on! x

  18. Oh my goodness they are flipping gorgeous! I read the title first and was thinking how on earth can you not like shoe shopping (I am a shoeaholic), but I get it now, it is difficult to find smaller sizes. I am a standard UK4 and I thought that was quite small actually x
