How to wear spring/summer pieces in winter

Outfit: Zara coat, Rick Owens jacket, Helmut Lang t-shirt, Petit Bateau sweat pants, Hermes cashmere shawl, Hermes Cape Cod watch and New Balance 420 sneakers

Having a minuscule closet means that there is no clear separation between spring/summer and fall/winter clothes. I don't  have many summer clothes because 1) I have a better chance of winning the Lotto than having a guaranteed summer in the U.K every year  2) it's pointless to spend £££ on clothes that get worn only a few months of the year. Yup, I'm a cheapskate.

Since I'd spent gazillions (okay, I'm exaggerating but it WAS expensive) on this lightweight Rick Owens jacket (which makes my bat wings look skinny and long), I've decided it's wearable all year round. I'm working on getting the cost per wear down so that I can justify the spending. I will probably freeze into an ice block if I ever attempt to wear it as a jacket on a cold winter day but it'll serve as a great layering piece. Clearly, I'm demented but the "logical" rationale is justifiable. There are pros to wearing a leather jacket underneath your coat. It traps the heat and doubles as a windproof jacket. I was warm in a jiffy despite the dreary weather outside ("logical" explanation number 2).

Hmm.....one day, I'm going to regret showing the world a photo of myself in an old pair of sweat pants. But then again, I'm trying to keep it real here in my little corner of the blogosphere......... For those of you who thought that I blended rather well into the background of these pictures (your observation couldn't be more correct), check out my bright red sneakers instead. See? I'm learning to like colors. Errr......I mean color.

  1. I hear you - after going to the beach over the summer break, I realised how much of a shortage I had when it came to summery tops, as I'd forgone them in lieu of sweaters, which tend to get worn more often. Think I'm going to struggle in Sydney.

PS. LOVE the pop of colour from your NB's - they look fantastic!

    1. I saw the photo of your dress and it made me feel homesick. Wait a minute. Are you moving to Sydney??

  2. Well I wrote recently what I think of sneakers and New Balance in particular, but I do think they suit you (or in other words you wear them nicely). Want a proof: I like your outfit. YES ! even the sweatpants (which I would never wear). I think it is your smile as well which is a big part of the outfit... Good point for introducing color...

  3. I'm beginning to think that I'd have a better chance at winning the lotto than ever experiencing a real summer here in Dunedin! Thanks for the leather jacket under a coat tip, I'm going to try it - sounds perfect for a Dunedin summer ;)

    1. Erm....good luck staying warm in Dunedin, Vanisha. I think my brothers drank A LOT of beers to keep themselves warm when they were studying there. I still can't understand why houses there don't have central heating.

  4. I like that you keep it real. Fashion isn't about luxury, but about being one's true self. Thanks for your honesty; thanks for posting.

    1. I know what you mean. I'm seeing more and more blogs geared towards glamor but it is rather unbelievable that people actually wear those type of clothes on a normal day.

  5. What else can be more comfortable than an old pair of sweat pants? Because of you and Eileen, last year my biggest 'fashion find' is sweat pants! - I Ying

    1. Hahaha.... Ooooops. Wouldn't it be neat if we started a sweat pants revolution. Just kidding :P Oh yeah! I've forgotten that it's Chinese New Year in a couple of days' time. Hey! Great timing or what with my bright red sneakers.

    1. Aww...Rachel. Thank you. I think I'm encourage to wear my sweat pants more now after reading everyone's comments. That may NOT be a good thing.

  8. I actually love seeing how people wear real clothes with style and attitude rather than a parade of make believe impractical outfits. And those red NB's! Good choice!

    1. It's funny you should mention this because I'm finding it harder and harder to find photos that are proper street style. Not ones that people truly dress up for.

  9. M, I'm just echoing what everyone else has said - the NB sneakers are a fab pop of color & looks great on you! I've yet to layer a leather jacket underneath a coat yet since the weather has been bearable for now. :P

    1. Don't speak too soon. I think there's more flood warning coming our way! I think I have the brightest shoes in Hampshire. Even "louder" than what the teens here wear.

  11. Love this, Marlene! You can swap the sweats for jeans or some other pants/skirt even and it's still a great combo.

Not that I mind the sweats. Was at Oysho a couple of weeks back during the sales. All the ladies were grabbing all the fancy underwear and I was like - bishes step away from the sweats! (obvs priorities, I have none). When I found a lovely pair, I proceeded to whisper "my precious" all the way to the checkout :)

Also nabbed great sweats by Whistles when they popped back on asos just before Christmas (Ł20!) Now those are fancy! And unfortunately too thin to be worn at the mo (below 0 here). But... their time will come :)

Hm reading all this... I realize I might have a problem :)

  12. Don't want to diss the Rick Owens (which looks great) but the Zara coat was an amazing buy and looks so good on you sweatpants and all. Susan, London

    1. Susan, I've had so many people asking me which designer label it was and then their jaw hit the ground when I said Zara and £25.
