Casual Everyday Outfit

winteroutfit-1.1
Outfit: Christys'of London "Harriet" fedora, Zara coat, Petit Bateau breton top, Zara skinny jeans, Repetto flats, Hermes Kelly 28.

I'm surprised that the weather hasn't been worse considering how appallingly long and cold the previous winter had been. The same can't be said for those of you who are living in the East Coast (U.S). This outfit of mine would've been considered hazardous and likely to induce instant hypothermia. Over here, we're battling with the rain, not snow (yet). I've learnt my lesson not to step out of my front door without a hood or hat. It's Murphy's Law. There will always be a sudden downpour the day you leave the house without something to cover your head.

My favorite Christys' fedora is currently suffering from OOS (occupational overuse syndrome) so to ease its pain, I placed an order for another. It was custom made for me but like all handmade things, they're never all that consistent. I ended up putting a long piece of felt along the leather seam to bulk it up (I've got a very small head which matches the size of my pixie feet). Interestingly enough, my hat works great as a conversation starter. I've had strangers walk up to me asking about whichever hat  I was wearing at the time. The 240 year old hatmaker produces some of the finest hats I've ever seen at very decent prices (£30 upwards).

I still have the bad habit of not bothering with my hair in the morning. *ahem* Actually, it's more like every single day. Plonking a fedora on my head meant that it covered my messy unbrushed hair (you can't get lazier than that). Et voila, problem solved.

  1. You had me at not bothering with the hair. I was tempted to get a fedora, but I'm not really a hat person. I have trouble keeping it on just like a toddler, guess that's where my kids get it from.

    Happy New Year!

    1. I think with a toddler, you'd need anything that is glued onto your head! I remember being whacked in the face with my glasses smashing into my eyes.

  2. I 'discovered' hats last year having always sworn off them since the hated school uniform hats of my childhood. But in middle age, my three fedoras (all relatively cheap chain store models) have become some of my most successful wardrobe staples. They always provoke compliments, hide bad hair and seem uniquely adapted for our cool, damp climate - I hardly ever bother with an umbrella these days. Rock on the hats! Susan

    1. Hats definitely add that extra lift to the outfit. It rains so much here and an umbrella is rubbish anyway.

  3. I love the colour of your hat, perfect for brightening up an outfit at this gloomy time of year. I have a little-worn black fedora - I can never get past the issue of having to take off the hat once I reach my destination. Whenever I do wear it I feel very cool, though. I'll have to get braver!

    1. I thought about having another black hat but the burgundy is a rather nice neutral. Oh yes, it's horrible when you've got a bad hair day and then you walk inside and have to take off the hat. I think the best way is not to have it tied up.

  4. That's so cute on you! I adore the hat! I just bought my first big floppy wool fedora but haven't worn it yet. Heat wave over here (hint, hint, come visit!). Seeing your Kelly makes me miss mine (at the spa having a stitch fixed. ) :(

    1. I'm downright envious about the heatwave you're having, right in the middle of winter.

  5. I'm rubbish with hats and yet I see them on others and think 'I should embrace this more' and not think about wearing one, just GRAB it as you would an umbrella

    1. It's a matter of finding the right one. I just bought another which makes me look like spongebob, a square head. Euwww. Lesson learned.

    1. What brand is it? I've been so out of the loop with Aussie and Kiwi designers lately.

  7. Simplicity at it's best and you won't regret the colour choice - I think it makes the outfit totally.

    Happy New Year 2014 Marlene!

  9. Zara coat, check: ecru navy breton, check: leopard ballet flats, check . Now I've taken the plunge in Hermes and bought a gold Evelyne [after the price increase , I'm no good at bargains] Now I'm going to have to get me a Christie's hat .
Thought I'd take a stroll to Jermyn Street to check out styles and sizes , have you been to the shop there ?
Also some advice re gold as handbag colour , I want to avoid matchy matchy like the plague but do you see it as a wear with everything colour if such a thing exists?
I adore it with neutrals especially black.
Really wanted a Kelly in gold but fed up with searching as import taxes on goods outside UK make it impossible to get a nice one at a sensible price .....

    1. I've only ever spoken to the manager at Christys' Jermyn St store. They don't have all the different styles available on their online store which is a bit annoying. The other good place to try is Liberty (the department store bought Christys' hats 2 years ago) but again, they only have a handful of styles. But definitely go and try the hats on to get a feel of what suits you. I have a round face so a hat that's too square just makes my face look wider than it already is. I have to go for something that's slightly more concave.

The one reason why I went for the Hermes gold was it just goes with everything and it also covers all seasons. I wasn't keen about buying a seasonal colored bag seeing how expensive the brand is. Good on you for biting the bullet and getting the Evelyne in gold. 10 years from now, your bag will be considered a bargain especially after 10 consecutive price increases.

I've tried to buy a few items from resellers in the US but the duty tax is a killer. I've paid £15 on a £30 item. Crazy.

  10. Yay, thanks for the thumbs up on my new bag! I opened the box after 2 days [ that's me in guilty denial !] and love the way it pulls on almost all my shawls and scarves...even the super-yellow Concours d'Etriers shawl .
I found the way you wear your bags enabling .Really cool!

    1. 2 whole days?! I admire your restraint. Gosh, I would've been trying on the bag and checking myself out in front of the mirror by the first hour. Oops. Guilty of being an enabler here. Gold stands out in a non intrusive way but just goes with everything. The problem with black is sometimes it just blends with the background.
