The temperature has dropped dramatically within the last 24 hours. Bugger. Pffffft..... I was hoping that sunshine and the mild weather will continue indefinitely but of course, that's rather optimistic of me. This is England after all, not California. Despite being a huge fan of jackets and coats, it was a relief not to pile them on for a change. So yes...... it's back to winter wonderland again. Sigh.

I'm trying to be a little cleverer this year by not doing last minute clamoring for winter coats when the mercury dips below 5˚C. Of course, every sane person in the U.K will be doing the very same thing which means EVERY decent winter coat will be sold out EVERYWHERE. Here's a few things I've learned from a list of endless mistakes I'd made.

1) Detachable lining is a major plus. It just means that I get an extra wear out of the coat which should at least cover 2 to 3 seasons instead of 1.
2. Hood. The bigger, the better. It's annoying when your head is dry but your entire face is dripping wet. And when you're wearing glasses....... let's just say, I've walked into lamp posts before cos I could not, for the life of me, see where I was going.
3. Length. Anything that goes past the hips is considered a "proper" coat/jacket. Just cos I like a warm bum.
4. Waterproof/water resistant. Ah...the rain. My brother asked why the grass in a photo I took recently looked so green. Well, dear brother.... that's because it rains a lot here. A LOOOOTT.

Here's my curated list of coats that ticked all the boxes. My friend wore the Barbour parka the other day and boy, did it look good AND practical. I was seriously impressed. One other thing, I was rather surprised how difficult it was to find a trench with a hood and detachable lining. You'd think that's a given seeing that the trench is actually considered a rain coat. Duh! I've narrowed my selections down to either a lined parka or puffer coat. Decisions. Decisions.

  1. Such an apt post! I'm currently looking at an ankle length leather and fur one—not something to go out into a snowstorm, but it sure looks super warm.

    1. I'm hoping that this winter's not going to last as long as the previous. It's better to be prepared. I *need* a faux fur lined hood too ;)

  2. Love the Parka you feature, I missed that one for my coat post! Would love to know how you have that rotating banner thingy at the bottom of the post, that is really cool! xx

  3. Considering my move to Dunedin - I'm going to be watching closely to see which one you get up getting. I personally don't like puffer jackets but I've heard they can be pretty amazing!

    1. Dunedin! I've spent a bit of time there. My 2 brothers went to Uni. there. I've resisted puffer jackets for the longest time but would've paid a lot more when the deep freeze happened last winter.

  4. Hi Marlene! Coming out of lurk mode to tell you that the Barbour jacket is amazing. Ticks of all the boxes plus I bet it doesn't weigh a ton. Very chic on top of all that. It would look great on you. :)

  5. The temperature has changed completely, one day it was verging on being muggy and now, freezing! I say freezing but give a month or two and then i'll remember what freezing really is! I love these coats, cant beat a khaki parka and a good old navy duffle coat has been on my list for a while now. :)

Take care and enjoy your weekend,

  6. Love this post , especially since the selection of coats and jackets that felt good for the past two years suddenly feel mwah. I was trying a selection of Barbour jackets as like you I think they are pretty cool especially those with belts. Love the black waxed version with belt and shall probably go for that , but your selection here are all great [especially the second row LOL]
Sorry I so seldom post , your blog is one of the very few I always read ...thankyou !

    1. Thank you ever so much, Estrella. That's so sweet of you. There's only a handful of ones from Barbour that have a fleece lining. I think that's so important as it's getting so cold now.

  7. This is so timely. I can't seem to find a parka to fit my frame and I'm resigned to the fact that a) I either have to buy something at Zara or b) splurge on a Burberry coat.

    1. If you have a chance, Amanda, I suggest you go and try on the Barbour parka I've suggested here. It has a slimmer construction (my friend is teeny tiny). It's extremely warm without the bulky look.

  8. All this standing round on football pitches has me hankering for something really substantial - it gets very cold after two hours of .... standing around. With no shelter. And the wind whistling around your ankles and your ears. I like the sound of anything fur lined providing it is not too heavy or I have been thinking again of a Northface Metropolitan. That was light, slimline and toasty. Might have to splurge. Or make the Grumps do the football - it's only right as he is dad.

    1. Ummmm....I don't think you'll ever find me on the fields in the freezing cold for the love of football. If grumps make you go, you deserve the best and winterproof coat you can get your hands on!

  9. Sigh. I wish I needed a winter coat. It really doesn't get cold enough here to buy more than one every few years. But I love your selection anyway!

    1. Heather, I WISH I don't need a winter coat. In fact, I'd love to swap places with you now :(

  10. I recently scored a parka from Zara, which has a hood and a detachable lining. The lining is really really warm by the way. So when the weather gets a bit colder here (I live in Greece) I'll start wearing it without the lining and when temperatures get even colder I'll wear it all together!

    1. I wish more coats have detachable lining. That should be a given really. I haven't spent any winters in Greece but I can imagine it must be really cold especially in the northern region.

  11. As always, your post is dead on time to prepare for the cold (it's freakin chilly right now in France- highest today will be 8 °C in my region...good thing I can't get up and walk with my torn Achille's tendon:(, so I am reading my favourite blog;)
    Have a great one

  12. Some gorgeous picks Marlene. Ha ha.. yes a warm bum is essential throughout winter! I remember the old Burberry trench coats that used to have the really thick wool removable lining. They were brilliant. I'm not sure if they do them anymore. The Barbour ones I've heard about but never tried them. I love those ones you've picked. They look so practical, warm and chic. Ticks all the boxes.

    1. I don't think Burberry trench coats have wool linings anymore. I think I've seen one but boy, it was a revelation when I found it!

  14. I know I am late (but eh I am a mature woman .... soon, so brain cells that plonked and so on lol !)but I recently (and I mean recently) found a bought parka at Mango. All right the hood is not detachable but the lining is as is the fur (faux) in the hood. And it suits my very petite frame and it is warm and convinced me to actually keep it (never say never yeah yeah). It green forest in colour and doesn't look frumpy (meaning I can even wear it at the office over a work appropriate skirt). Well it reaches my knees but, as I said, I am very petite. Price tag: 130 euros. If ever I am happy with a purchase, this it! I was looking for a coat but no luck for good price/quality one so I ended with this parka. I am ready to come (again) to the cold of winter England (last time I came in March was a very cold, windy and snowy week end while in France it was rather well, mild).

    1. I think the brain cells dissolve into liquid the minute we pop out a kid or two AND work..... I haven't even looked at Mango!! I've looked at the Uniqlo parka and it's actually too long for my frame. Okay, off to check out Mango now.

  15. What did you get in the end? I'm debating that Uniqlo long ULD parka with hood, but they also have a nice printed one without hood?! Of the hooded one, the only color that appeals to me is the black one... but I think it's so booring as I have so many black coats!
I do have a Barbour black belted (no hood) waxed and medium weight lined trench style... however, I find I don't use it much because that black wax gets everywhere! Especially on my nice handbags! How do you solve that problem??!!!

Thanks for a great post! :)

    1. How odd about the wax on the Barbour jacket. I haven't had that problem but then again mine's safari green. In fact, I need to rub more wax on mine. My husband has quite a few Barbour jackets in his closet but none are black. I guess it's safer not to sling your bag or wear it close to your body. I'm holding out for another Barbour. I have a very old black trench coat. Despite loving black so much, it's only recently that I own my first black blazer in years.

    2. Have you seen this one?!

Uniqlo down, with removable hood and fur trim! Debating a color now... what do you think?!

      Delete
    3. No I haven't but that fur trim makes it a winner. I know....I'm rather obsessed with fur trims at the moment. Go for it! Oh, and great price too.

  16. Thanks! But now I'm stuck on what color as I'm not near a store to view it in person. Purple, Tan, or (standby) Black??

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that'll depend on your coloring. I find tan makes me look rather washed out. Purple is flattering on me but I'm not a fan of the color. Haha...you're asking the wrong person because you'll know by now that I'm addicted to black, navy, grey and safari green.

    2. Thanks, I'm Asian as well.... probably will go with the stand-by black! Thanks for your help!
