The last time I was in Cannes was about 16 years ago and I barely remember the place. I was on a budget Contiki tour with 40 others who were hungover just about everyday with the exception the 4 of us that were either too young to imbibe or have severe allergic reaction to alcohol. This time I'm back with a young daughter and a husband in tow,  a lot more grey hair but minus my well worn backpack.

Cannes is definitely a playground for the rich and famous. Or just rich. Very very rich. It was strangely disconcerting to see slick (dirty) old men garbed in designer gear openly ogling younger women and tweens/teens carrying designer bags. Shopping in Cannes is a pleasure. High end designer boutiques line the stretch of Boulevard de la Croisette along the beach. I've found a few specialist boutiques, some of which aren't all that well known outside of France along with a patisserie/chocolatier that is like heaven on earth. I can't wait to share these with you.

I nipped into Chanel to ask if they have any black caviar leather wallet on chains (WOC) but they're sold out. In fact, they're so popular that they fly off the shelves the minute they get a delivery.  I had to try on a black tweed jacket (similar to the one in the photo but in black) but at 4600€, it's more of a dream than a reality. I thought I'd strap on my Hermes Collier de Chien to try to blend into the Cannes scene. The daughter complained that my bracelet looked like a weapon and the husband asked if it was a bondage cuff that I'd bought at a sex shop. Pffffffffffffft........!! Don't they know that anything that comes in an orange Hermes box is sacred? It was fun to enjoy the pretentiousness that surrounds Cannes for a couple of days but I feel more comfortable in Nice.

  1. M, too funny about the CDC! Any photographic evidence of the black tweed jacket? :) Would love to see it on you.

    1. I don't know why it took me this long to get back to South of France. I wouldn't mind to spend my next summer here.

  3. I think Cannes is a bit rubbish, it's one of the uglier parts of the south of France, and I say that after my parents having had a house there for 20 years, the house was great but we always went to Cap d'Antibes or Cap Ferrat, so much less built up and so naturally beautiful.

    You look wonderful!

    1. Tabitha, I wouldn't mind having a cottage in Nice, Villefranche sur mer or Eze but I can't say I'm a fan of Cannes.

  7. You just look so chic even in the heat. How do you do it?

I look like a red faced huff puff monster when the temps get above 24 degrees.

    1. I look like a tomato once I'm in the hot sun. Cannes is actually pretty shady and a lot cooler than Nice.

  8. Oh my, these shots and of course the setting are just beautiful. I'm going to France twice this year and it is a shame I haven't gone to the South of France. Perhaps next year then?

Oh and old men ogling young ladies with designer goodies sounds like parts of Asia too!

    1. I don't know why I left it this long to return to South of France either. You'll definitely have to go. LOL. I didn't know the old men in Asia do that. Ewwwww!

  9. I'm intrigued by your comment about blending in with the Cannes scene. Did you pack an Hermes bag with you or did you take more modest bags for practicality's sake? I'm always torn about wearing nice jewellery and designer goods on my travels. On the one hand I want to "dress well," but on the other I'm wary of being targeted by pickpockets/thieves or messing up my designer bags, so I usually leave the Chanels, for example, at home. Then when I see all the locals looking chic and polished in their designer duds, I feel like a shabby tourist. :) I guess I'm still looking for the right balance.

    1. I didn't bother with my Hermes bags at all. It's hard lugging a heavy DSLR with all the gizmos I have to stuff into a bag. I brought my LV Speedy Bandouliere which is really light and durable and the Coach which I don't care if there's a stain or numerous scratches. I feel like a slob at times when I walk into a luxury store here along the French Riviera when these glamorous women in heels and designer bags are shopping in the same stores. You can guess who got better service from the sales ladies.

  10. Love this post! You're such a talent in photography and writing! I'll be visiting Monte Carlo in two weeks and am already scared for all the intimidating rich and famous, not to mention the large amount of expensive stores. :s
