Ms Porker is my middle name or at least that's what I resemble after an entire weekend of being  wined and dined by our friends, Noel and Amy. She was appalled that I rarely celebrate my birthday so let's just say that the celebration began early this year. My metabolic rate is as slow as the first generation iPhone and the law of gravity applies to my body as well.  BUT what the heck. Diet begins tomorrow. Err...or when school term begins again.

The gorging session began at Goldmine (Tube: Queensway or Bayswater). You know you're in for a treat at a Chinese restaurant when most of the diners are Asians and there's a queue out the door. The Cantonese/Malaysian cuisine was lip smacking good. Thank goodness there's no fake Chinese dish such as chow mein or sweet and sour pork in sight. We made a couple of trips to Shoryu (Tube: Piccadilly Circus) because our craving for a good proper and authentic Tonkotsu ramen was killing us. I tried their hirata buns for the first time. It was so different from what I used to eat from Borneo. Not bad but I think I prefer the Taiwanese/Malaysian version. I stumbled upon a small Japanese store that sells ceramics and all the Japanese magazines that I used to buy a few stores down from Shoryu.

The next day, we took a walk from Island Gardens to the other side of Thames via an underground tunnel in the river. I don't know about you but the wet, cold and damp tunnel scares the crap out of me (just in case there's a hairline leak somewhere. Anywhere. Eeeeks!) especially when I know that I'm officially underwater the entire time I'm walking through the tunnel.

The Royal Naval College in Greenwich was designed by Christopher Wren. It's a stunning architectural masterpiece and the sheer size of the building will leave you breathless. The one thing that never fails to amaze me in the UK is the incredible amount of work and resources that go into preserving heritage buildings for the next generation and beyond. Just so you know several scenes of Les Miserables and Pirates of the Caribbean - Stranger Tides were filmed there.

We spent the rest of the day just strolling around Greenwich and relaxing by the park. Life is so hectic these days that it's pure bliss just hanging out and relaxing with friends. We're off on an early start tomorrow to catch a flight.

  1. I confess to being a total heathen and actually like chow mein and sweet and sour pork (I tend to keep it secret though ... but now everyone knows). But that bowl of ramen looks scrumptious - I could murder one of those any time.

    I enjoy the Chinese mags which my sister brings back sometimes. No idea what they say but the pics are good. I'm a disgrace.

    1. Nooooooooo! Sue, how could you?! Chow mein?! Well, I'll have to drag you to one of the 3 popular ramen noodle restaurants in London the next time we catch up. And no! I won't let you near any Chinese restaurants for fear that you order sweet and sour pork.

    and I will say that as an Asian I'm all for queuing for delicious food hehe. As a group I think we're the most complacent about long waiting times, as long as the food has been sufficiently hyped up!

    1. Thanks, Quinn! I know! It's such an Asian thing. The longer the queue, the more we're compelled to join it because we all know that there's ALWAYS a long queue at awesome restaurants.

    1. Thanks! It's the Japanese tonkotsu ramen where the pork bone is boiled for hours and hours. You're right, the broth is more milky in color.

  7. Lovely photos. I love that you visited The Royal Naval College- it's so beautiful. My family has such a love for visiting beautiful colleges and universities when you travel. I never get tired of it.

  8. Not sure if you have tried Bone Daddies but it's pretty delicious ramen. As for hirata buns, the ones I tried at Shoryu weren't that good. :) My friend, Jenee from Camo meets Couture (blog) referred me to your blog! :) Nice photos.

      Jenee is such a sweetheart! Thank you for stopping by. Bone Daddies is definitely one of my favorite ramen noodle restaurants. I haven't been there for a while though. You're right. The hirata buns at Shoryu were ghastly. Nothing like the original.
