Two Miracle Products

papaw2

I cannot NOT share this miracle ointment so bear with me while I gush about it. My mom bought this Lucas Papaw ointment for me on a whim at an airport. For those of you who live in Australasia, this ointment is probably as common as sheep over there.

Last year, I managed to get a self inflicted burn which was awful to say the least (never put your arm across a boiling kettle! The steam is deadly. Yeah, you know but did I know that?!). The roughly 4 inch burnt skin healed with such astonishing speed within 24 hours after I slathered the papaw ointment. And 48 hours later, the skin was smooth albeit a bit marked.

A few days ago, I came home from London with a souvenir, presumably a flea who took great delight in feasting on various parts of my body. Have I ever mentioned that I hate ALL insects? I'm also allergic to this parasitic pest. Well, silly me applied the ointment on some bites but not the ones on my ankle and foot. Guess which healed and which didn't?  I walked around for days with a visibly swollen and disfigured ankle as well as HUGE red welts which itched like hell despite the fact that I was popping anti-histamine pills like candies. The Liberty SA who was assisting me while I was trying on Manolo Blahnik heels audibly gasped and backed away with a horrified look (I'm a natural human repellent). I came home, applied the ointment generously and by morning, my ankle has returned to its normal size with now nearly flat bite marks.

Despite its blab about using natural ingredients - yes, it's made of fermented papaya but it also contains petroleum. Since it has worked wonders on me and I only ever use it sparingly, it doesn't overly concern me. The Lucas papaw ointment isn't all that easy to find outside Australasia but so far, I think they're available at Pawpaw shop in London (they take online orders) or here for international orders without charging an extortionate amount for shipping.

Lancome Hypnose Star mascara (U.S here)

I am a self confessed mascara virgin. The make up artist at my wedding discouraged me from using a mascara stating that the result would be practically invisible when I opened my eyes (Asian eyes and all). I took her word to be the gospel and never attempted to apply a mascara for the next 13 years UNTIL my friend aka make up genius, Christy placed a Lancome sample tube into the palm of my hand and insisted I gave it a try. I have dead straight and short lashes. However, the combination of the famed Shu Uemura lash curler and Lancome Hypnose Star mascara resulted in super long, curled and thick eyelashes. It made me want to go out and bat my eyelashes at everyone in town. And brought out my normally hidden narcissistic tendency - I can't stop admiring my long eyelashes in front of the mirror.

  1. I used to use that mascara but it wasn't called "Star" back then or is this a different one? I have stupidly short and stubby lashes and got on well with this. I only ever used Lancome for years. x

  2. Oh, M. You cracked me up with the last few sentences. "It made me want to go out and bat my eyelashes at everyone in town." Well, hello there! ;) Fancy meeting up over some drinks soon? :P (Sorry, I couldn't help myself!)

    1. When you go from short lashes to super duper long ones in under a minute, you want to REEEEALLY show them off.

  3. Lucas Papaw Ointment - something I can't live without - I use it as a lip balm, on cracked skin, insect bites... I was so happy to discover Pawpaw Shop early last year. I don't have to get my family to ship me the ointment when I'm running out of it.

    1. Kit, I think so. My skin was badly burnt and was weeping so I guess it would classify as a blister too.

  5. I have wanted to try the Lucas Papaw ointment for some time. There are a few independent apothecaries that sell it here and everyone I know in the beauty industry swears by. I've always held back because of the petroleum. But it is so tempting...

I love a good mascara. I'm obsessed with lashes.

    1. It is THAT incredible, Lindsay. I am extremely allergic to flea bites and these helped more than my anti-histamine. The only thing is I don't think I'd put the ointment on my lips though. Not sure I want to eat the petroleum based product.

  7. Have to check out the Pawpaw ointment. I know my little man reacts to mossie bites really badly, so this might just be what we need - and I can use it too:)

    1. Thanks, Rachel. I might try the Phytocare range when my tube's finished.

    2. I just went to Amazon.co.uk and ordered some Phytocare from the Pawpaw shop. 100 grams for £17 (inc. postage) and the larger size is even better value

    3. Let me know how it works out. I've only ever used the petroleum based ointment so I'm interested to hear how the other one pans out for you.

  9. Thanks for sharing these gems with us, that ointment sounds pretty magical and even though I have fairly long eye lashes, they are actually quite straight, so i'm always on the look for one that will work wonders! When i'm out of mascara next, i'll be sure to try this Lancome one :)

Take care and have a great week,

  11. The ointment sounds like a miracle worker & is something I've been meaning to try for ages (after hearing it raved about everywhere), but I didn't know you could buy it from London! I hear it's supposed to be very good at helping with scarring too & for someone as accident prone as me, anything that will help fade those marks & heal them quicker would be a godsend!

  12. perfect timing! i'm running out of mascara and was looking for a new one to try! will look into this one on my next sephora visit. thanks. xo!

  13. I don't have a mascara - all the ones I had were freebies (lancome and clinique) but I never used them for the same reason as you - I didn't think it would make a difference and besides I can't put mascara on without swiping some across my nose for some stupid reason. I gave all of mine away. But now I'm thinking I should try again. I know a friend who did some makeup on me once and she tutted at my idea of what makeup was and proceeded to work some magic on my eyes. She insisted I needed mascara as "everyone" needs mascara even if your eyelashes are black and short. I think she had a point but I just never got round to getting one again. This one sounds a goody.

I've heard of the pawpaw ointment - just not come across it in real life and that's probably because like you say - it's not readily available in the shops. However, my family swear by breaking an aloe vera leaf and rubbing the thick "juice/sap" stuff directly on to burns.

  14. I finally bought a tube of the Papaw ointment last year and have only ever used it on my lips. Wish I'd thought to put it on my itchy bites as I too suffer allergies - will be putting it on the almost healed marks and hopefully that will help them fade! x

  15. I've never heard of that ointment. I'll have to see if it's available in the states! Thanks for sharing it Marlene! Awesome that you found a mascara that works for you too! :)

  16. Need to check out that ointment. My son suffers from pretty bad hives from time to time. The pediatrician said he will grow out of it eventually, but in the mean time, he recommended different ointments to relieve the itching. None has worked so far. Maybe this might help. Hopefully i can find some.

    1. Fiona, I've included a couple of links above. Or you can google pawpaw shop London. They have a store on Amazon as well.

  18. I hear you with the Asain eyes. Putting on mascara is actually the one beauty thing I do everyday and cannot leave the house anymore without it. Here is my holy trinity and really help hold the curl in our stubborn Asian lashes:
    Muji eyelash curler
Shiseido lash primer (really holds the curl in place!)
Shu Uemura waterproof volumizing mascara in black

    1. I had NO idea Muji sells eyelash curler. I'll have to check out the Shiseido lash primer and mascara. I wonder if Harrods has a Shiseido counter.

  19. Yay for papaw ointment! I use it as lip balm and it's very good, doesn't dry my lips out and I only need to use it once every few days as a shield against air conditioning. I've also used it for small burns, insect bites and to sooth my chafed skin if I've been blowing my nose all day from my overly sensitive sinuses. I got it as a gift from a friend who visited Australia last year, and I bought a second tube to stock up when I saw it in NZ. Good stuff!
