T-Shirt & Jeans, 4 Ways

Tuesday 23 April 2013
I've just found out that I've been nominated and shortlisted for the Brilliance in Blogging Award 2013 under the Photography category. Thank you, Avril of School Gate Style because I know YOU actually put my name forward despite refusing to admit the fact. I'm sending a massive virtual kiss and hug to you. This is a complete surprise because 1) I didn't even know this award exists  2) someone out there was kind enough to nominate me.

Um....embarrassingly enough, I've reverted back to using my Samsung Galaxy Note for photos. I've managed to bribe persuade Lil L to help me with the photography. She agreed with the condition that I credit her work (geez, kids these days!!).  So, if you have a moment and you think that my photography (or perhaps Lil L's) is up to par, please feel free to vote for me here.

Casual
Outfit: Alexander Wang t-shirt (U.S here), Hermes belt (hidden), Zara boyfriend jeans, Hermes Cape Cod watch and K. Jacques Picon sandals (U.S here)

The word "experimental" just doesn't exist in my vocabulary unless you slot in "non" in front of it. My brain just isn't wired that way. My brain cells literally self combust when I have to think too hard about getting dressed. So years ago, I devised a uniform based upon a foundation of t-shirts and jeans. The jackets, shoes and bags are swapped around depending on my mood or the events that I have to attend.

Currently, I'm addicted to Alexander Wang t-shirts - the dude seriously knows how to make the best t-shirts.  I own 4 with another one swinging its way to me as I'm typing this out. They're best worn lopsided and half tucked in with an air of dishevelment (actually, I forgot to check myself in the mirror before being photographed. Doh!) And of course, let's not forget my infamous Zara boyfriend jeans which have been featured here so often that you're probably wondering if I ever peel them off my lower torso. Just so you know, I do wash these jeans - when I have to.

Smart casual
Outfit: Alexander Wang t-shirt (U.S here), Mango blazer (use 20% discount code GLAMOURISTDERHIT), Hermes belt (hidden), Zara boyfriend jeans, See by Chloe wedges (similar here and U.S here), Hermes Cape Cod watch and Hermes Kelly (or here)

I've mentioned about getting this Mango blazer previously in another post. I've avoided buying too many High St clothes because I find myself chucking them out more often than not. To my surprise,  this linen/cotton blend blazer looks and fits remarkably like a piece from a high end line despite its £45 tag (lower if you use the discount code). The blurry and grainy photo just doesn't do it any justice. The only thing I don't like about it is the pink lining but then again, I'm allergic to pink. It reminds me of the two years (feels like a lifetime) when Lil L was addicted to those horrific looking, poofy, vomit inducing princess gowns. Euwwwww.

uniform-Chanel1

Chanel
Outfit: Alexander Wang t-shirt (U.S here), Chanel tweed boucle jacket (similar here), Hermes belt (hidden), Zara boyfriend jeans, Hermes Cape Cod watch and Halogen Bianca wedges (U.S here)

I'm not particularly ladylike, thanks to my years of involvement in martial arts. It's a wonder that I even managed to learn to shake my saggy booties a little when I walk. Annnnyway, that's waaay TMI. In an effort to make myself look a little more mature (I said look, not act), I like putting on a Chanel jacket but hey, a leopard can't change its spots and neither can I. I like the stark juxtaposition between my bada$$ ripped jeans and the more sophisticated jacket. Perfection is soooo boring. Imperfections are way cooler. Like totally.

uniform-RO1

Edgy
Outfit: Alexander Wang t-shirt (U.S here), Rick Owens biker jacket, Hermes belt (hidden), Zara boyfriend jeans, Hermes Cape Cod watch, Hermes Kelly (or here) and ankle boots (similar here)

This outfit rocks my boat because it's slightly androgynous, more edgy and appeals to my tomboyish tendencies. The Hermes Kelly is only handheld for the purpose of this photo but I normally wear it cross body.

What's your spring uniform? For those of us who live in this part of the colder continent, I know layering is the key to getting dressed but I'm curious if you have a uniform that you stick to.

  1. Love each and every single look Marlene, sometimes I get so caught up in fashion I forget that these simple looks are nearly always the best- jeans, T and blazer is hard to top. You and Sue both are reminding me of this quite regularly which I love!!

  2. I love the idea of having a uniform and dressing up and down according to your mood or occasions. Mine happens to be skinny jeans with a Petit Bateau V-neck T-shirt. For casual wear, I'll pair them with Repetto sneakers or K-Jacques sandals and to dress them up I'll wear Repetto ballerinas, a cuff, an Hermès scarf, a Lanvin clutch and red lips.
PS. Bravo on being nominated for the award!

  3. damn you and that jacket again! I love all these looks, each different. My favourite two (not that you asked!) are the first and last.

I voted for you yesterday :-) Good luck!

  4. I basically love it all, and your hair too, do you really just wash it and leave it?

    1. Thanks, Tabitha! I just wash and when it's dry, tie it into a loose bun and let it down when I need to go out. Some days I add a little Moroccanoil for a bit of a shine. I haven't brushed my hair in months!

  5. Congrats on the nomination! Will cast my vote for you. :) As for Spring uniform while it's still a little chilly out, my straight leg jeans are a must paired with some tee/top and depending on how I feel, my leather jacket or blazer. I fall in love with the Hermes Kelly every time I see it, so thanks for rekindling my love for it. ;)

  7. I always look forward to your posts not only for the wonderful photos but also for your intelligent, though provoking and witty write ups to! I love every one of these looks, each outfit is relatable but still so chic and unique to you because of the personal touches, such as your shoes, accessories and your beautiful collection of jackets. I think a lot can often forget how important owning a simple grey tee and a pair of boyfriend jeans can be. I of course voted for you and congratulations on being nominated, you completely deserve all the wonderful recognition you can get :)

Take care and enjoy the rest of your week,

    1. That's such a lovely compliment because in reality when my smile was frozen and I was gritting my teeth while Lil L took 5 mins to frame each shot!

  10. Come on - how come your Lil L can do that and none of my two boys can take a single in focus picture of me that I can use. I either get shots of my knees or a picture of the top of my head and no outfit. Oh I get it ... I'm not bribing them enough! Doh.

Absolutely love all the outfits and I love the grey tee and boyfriend jeans - my staples for this summer as well. Once you have those two basics, you can rock just about anything with them as you have just proven. I might have to take a look at the navy linen blazer - it looks good but like you - pink lining - euuuwwww.

Congratulations on the vote too - it's well deserved - your photography is awesome.

  13. Ok - Spring has not arrived yet, so I can not think spring. I'm still in my jeans, boots long sleave t's and Fenn Wright Mason wool cardigans:( I am also allergic to pink, but every now and then I try to embrace it, however, it usually does not last long. I voted for your lovely photos and also noted the delightful Avril had a a nomination for style so ticked away there too:))

  14. Love each and every one of those looks. And looks like Lil L has inherited her mom's talent with a camera! Fascinated by how great the Mango jacket looks (wondering is the vital accessory of your great hair that makes it look so good?) Think I might have to investigate that further. Helen
Oh .. voted for you last night! Fingers crossed

  15. I think that my uniform is very similar to yours! I live in skinnies, a loose T to hid the mummy tummy, a cashmere jumper, and my Hermes H-our watch with double strap like yours :) I am totally addicted to K Jacques sandals too and so excited that we can actually wear them again. I don't shop much at MANGO but I'm definitely heading over this weekend. Loving all the jackets in your photos. xox

  21. A big congrats to the nomination!!:D

I love the RO jacket on you.. fits so perfectly! What size do you wear for the AW tee?

As for my uniform, it's basically the same all year round - a cotton dress or nice boho blouse + skinny pants/jeans. I wear the same IM linen jacket and change the shoes around depending on the event.

    1. I normally wear a S but in this case, they ran out of the smaller size so I went home with a medium instead. I love your summer outfit. I never know what to wear in hotter climates.

  22. I think I've said it before, but your outfits are the epitome of 'cool elegance' to me. I love that they are effortless and yet eye-catching, classy but with a modern twist. The spring uniform I'd compiled last year for my blog was boyfriends jeans, ballet flats and cross body bags (oh and a mariniere because I'm obsessed with them!). It's a chic look to go about the city and your Chanel blazer adds a touch of maturity that counterbalances the jeans and makes everything put together and lady-like. And not only does it look good but it's a practical outfit for all times of the day and most occasions, so in a word: flawless! :D

    I haven't tried Alexander Wang tees but you make them sound wonderful, so now I'm curious! And I do like them half tucked in on the front - it's more flattering wearing t-shirts like that that having them covering most of the top part of the trousers because when I do it, I always end up looking frumpy ^^;;;

  26. Congratulations on the well-deserved nomination. That's amazing Marlene!

I love all of these looks. A jacket just pulls together almost anything and makes it look smarter. You have some keepers.

    Off to vote!

  27. Love the outfits!
I work in a business-casual office so my uniform is a dress pant or skirt + heeled-shoe/sandal/boot + button down (or tank in summer) and an interesting jacket (not a suit jacket). You know, mostly separates.

  30. Hi Marlene - I've been an absent little commenter - so sorry! - but came out of the woodwork to tell you how pretty your hair looks! And LOVE the glasses. You look so cute in them. Wish I could look like that in mine.

    Anyway, great outfits too!

  31. Your outfits are proof that style doesn't need extra stuff, branding to be cool. Okay, maybe a little Kelly and Chanel jacket do add some dazzle! Hehe!;))

  32. I recently found your blog and I'm hooked. I love your style! Can I ask you something if it isn't rude. How tall are you? I'm 4'10 1/2" (149cm) and I'm trying to figure out if the Alexander Wang T would fit me or not. Do you think the XS would be too big? As you may have realized, I have a hard time finding clothes that fit me. Thank you! =)

    1. Hi B, thank you for taking the time to write. I'm 5'2 (and a quarter. Every inch counts!). I wear a size S and even bought an M which was probably too big. I'd say, XS is fine as it's meant to be slightly over-sized. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much! You've convinced me to give it a shot. Thanks!
