Layering for Winter Months

The entire U.K was in snow hysteria when the first hint of snowfall appeared late last week. Offices and schools across the country were closed, flights were grounded and trains were either delayed or canceled. Needless to say, there were a lot of ecstatic kids last Friday who dragged their miserable parents out of their lovely toasty homes into the snow to build snowpeople (in the interest of keeping everything P.C. Just kidding) and go sledging (that's sledding for those of you who are Americans). Shops selling sledges and snow boots were doing a roaring business. I trudged through inches of snow just to find one sledge. Dear Lil L, you'd better remember this when I'm 80 and require dentures.

I thought it'd be a neat idea to trek up to one of the highest points in the city and go sledging. Poor Lil L slipped and ended face down in the mud (check out the photo above) and so did I. You couldn't tell from the photos below that I had mud on my boots, jeans and coats. Only Christy remained unscathed. Lucky girl.

Outfit: Icebreaker merino vest, Helmut top, Zadig & Voltaire sweater, Comptoir des Cotonniers chunky cardigan, Gloverall coat (similar here and here), Louis Vuitton shawl, Stuart Weitzman boots (similar here or here) and Christys' fedora.

In the interest of keeping it real, I decided 1) not to Photoshop the gunk out. What you see is what you get. Mud, snow, sludge and all. I'm likely to regret these photos by next week.  2) wear my everyday winter clothes instead of pretending to glide through inches of snow in a more glamorous outfit and heels and risk breaking my neck or getting frostbite. Amputation of limbs due to vanity ain't cool.
3) to wear next to no make up out of sheer laziness which made me look like a member of the undead family.

So let's talk about layering. I had 5 layers on - merino vest, long sleeved t-shirt, woolen jumper, chunky cardigan followed by my coat. I have woolly insoles in my boots to keep my toes warm. I'm channeling cool fashion editors here who decided not to put their arms through the sleeves and ended up holding on to their coat for dear life. Utterly pretentious, of course but it covered the lovely smears all over my jeans. Hmm... perhaps, I'm keeping it too real here. Sorry.

I'm not the best at layering. Do share your tips on how to keep warm in winter.

  1. Fabulous pics! I think we are the only area in the country that don't have snow, I am so envious.

  2. Such gorgeous pictures. Wish I looked that good without make-up and covered in mud (which I can't see incidentally!)

  3. Your pictures in the snow are also spectacular !
I think i see your point about being well clad in winter. This week-end a blogger thought it witty to be shot in high heels and light pants and top, in the London snow. Smarty pants !! Layers are the best way to keep warm !

  4. Hi there! wow your layering is very inspirational and just perfect for the weather we're having, you look fabulous! Great pictures too, sounds like you all had such a fun time! xxx

  5. Well I can recommend the fleece lined tights from Primark if you should ever come across a pair to wear under your jeans. I dug some out today when I was forcibly sent out of the house by the Grumps to spend time with the boys "having fun" in the snow. Yeah right. I also put sheepskin insoles in my boots to take the edge off the cold in my boots - I am such a wuss. I don't do snow, I don't do cold. Lovely pictures though - much better than my efforts. And where's your snow boots my girl??? Hope you cleaned your boots well after - hate to think of those getting salt marks on them. I can thoroughly recommend a trapper hat though - now that is toasty!

  6. Woow, that's a lot of layers.... It's -20 C here and I only wear a sweater and a thin coat....

  7. Stunning pictures Marlene, I love the first photo and the one of the cafe chairs. I've always felt that empty chairs look like people. I wish we had snow like that around here, instead we just get the nippy end of winter without any of the fun. I absolutely adore your winter coat and the layering of an assortment of closet staples. For someone who has no make up on, you look pretty darn good. Keep the photos coming!

  8. Marlene these photos are so incredibly pretty, and I'm really liking how you layered and styled your outfit. Nice mix of colors, textures, and volume. You look great! As for layering, I tend to just mix thin and bulkier pieces until I'm warm. :)

  9. Love these beautiful pictures and really couldn't tell you had mud on your boots and jeans if you didn't mention it. I think you look really stylish in the snow. A lot more stylish than I would under the same conditions. I am not very good a layering myself. I usually just wear a t-shirt and a jumper on top and put on a really warm coat. Adding a scarf, beanie and gloves and I am good to go, well still suffering from the cold, but just not good at layering I guess... :)

  10. Looks like so much fun! I probably look like a Michelin Man in this snowy weather haha! Love the layering and amazing how you managed to look like on a set of a photo shoot!

    Kisses from Dubai!

  11. I'm thankful it never snows in Wellington, I wouldn't know what to do with myself. I think UNIQLO heat tech is meant to be amazing for layering under things? I need to get me some. You look chic though even with all those layers! xx

    1. I hereby attest to Uniqlo's Heat Tech garments. I have the turtleneck and leggings to layer underneath sweaters and jeans/work pants and they're fabulous! They kept me warm while I was in Oslo last year during Winter along with layers of cashmere and/or wool!

  12. Hunter snow boots, a coat that covers your bum and has a fur lined hood. And a really big Missoni scarf. Doesn't really matter about layers or thermals if you wear those things. I never wear thermals in the UK. x

  13. Those photos are gorgeous, love the one with the frosty trees. But all that white bright snow must show up every spot and wrinkle (not that you have that problem AT ALL, you look very glam).

  14. Look at all that snow! Play time!
Photos are amazing! It looks like you guys had fun! I'm a little jealous. We were expecting snow last weekend but got rain instead...boo.
I think you did wonders in layering! Pretty stylish, too! I would be in sweats and a coat that looks like a sleeping bag.
As always, love you humor....thanks for the laugh...dentures...haha

  15. I love all the snow... it looks like a fairytale come to life! i am all for layering here in NYC, but that tends to mean some form of cashmere and my "doona jacket". You'll know what you mean because you're from my side of the world... So, I think I need to take a leaf out of your book and layer properly because your everyday outfit looks a lot more fabulous than mine!

  16. Loving those pictures - you look like you're having a ball. Sounds like you've got the layers about right too. I agree with Sue and the Primark fleece tights - they are amazing! Avril x

  17. Gorgeous photos Marlene! It's always so picturesque when it snows. We're still waiting for snow here.

I love how you layer. It seems like you have it down and still managed to look really polished. I have to layer because I'm just not built for the cold. When I need to keep warm but elevate the look I find that a touch of fur does the trick.

  18. i love layering but i hate the cold - what a dilemma right. and on the other hand i'm wishing it was a bit colder here, summer's been fun but i'm not really built to handle 40+c days.

    ps. that fedora is divine!

  19. I am so in love with the first picture! And it looks so cold..grrr
Love the neutral palette of your outfit. Looks so chic and timeless.

I have been very busy over the weekend with some national issues so have quite a bit to catch up on your blog. But it is nice to go back to doing "normal" things:)

  20. Great pictures and you look great! I couldn't not put my arms in my coat, I would surely fall over whilst holding on to it for dear life!
