Wedding Outfits

"Mommy, you have the best fakest smile ever!", Lil L said encouragingly as I was trying my darnest to pose for the photos. Errr ...... thanks. I think. Sometimes honesty is completely over-rated. For the inquiring minds (yes, Eileen, I'm talking to you), these are my two outfits to the wedding. As you can see, the t-shirt is askew and the (fake) smile is rather lopsided while I herd the sheep (Lil L) and hauled 10 pounds of equipment to the hotel for the wedding photoshoot.

I admire ladies like Garance Dore and Hanneli Mustaparta who can look unbelievably chic while carrying heavy camera gear and running around taking photos. Chances are, I would've unknowingly flashed at poor unsuspecting souls or perhaps struggled to bend down while racing from one location to the next in a dress and heels. I decided to spare everyone the embarrassment by sticking to a pair of comfortable pants and a jacket, both came with plenty of pockets for lens caps, memory cards and whatnots.

I have to eat humble pie after my rant earlier in the year about not buying expensive t-shirts. I caved in and bought a couple of Alexander Wang tees. They're by far the most flattering t-shirts I've ever come across. The scoop neckline dips just low enough to flatter but most importantly, I like the longish sleeves and the way it skims the body perfectly.

Irene modeling my Zara jacket. Actually, she was freezing and it was the only convenient piece of clothing lying around.

Zara jacket, Karen Walker dress (US here and UK here) and Chanel sunglasses (similar here)

While we entertained the wedding guests at our flat, I quickly changed into a dress for the reception. It's the end of the day and both Irene and I were barely coherent. My make up has completely worn off. Probably not a good idea to post the photo on the blog but hey, what you see is what you get.

    1. I'm so pleased you think so. I ran out of time and decided to hem the trousers myself. It took me 3 hours (I can't sew well) to do the job!!

  2. Ahh love your outfit! The jacket is beautiful!

  5. You look beautiful and I love everything you're wearing in that first picture. That Momo jacket looks like it was made for you. Wang's t-shirts are great aren't they! I only have the muscle shirts, are you wearing a long sleeve in that pic?

    1. Nope, I've got these are short sleeves but I may think about getting long sleeve versions for the winter months.

  7. You look fantastic Marlene! I love the two outfits you picked out. Would love to see some of these wedding photos, your friend couldn't have picked a better photographer. Okay back to drooling over your IM jacket now.

  8. Love the two outfits and really love the fact that you rocked it up with a biker style jacket with the dress. Infact, I just clicked on the link to the Zara jacket (can't afford the IM one) and ordered it. The chances of me bumping in to you wearing it will be mega slim so please just take it as imitation being the sincerest form of flattery! Though I bet it looks rubbish on me :o(

    1. Sue, regarding the Zara jacket, you'll be surprised at the fit. Very VERY flattering. A friend came by and tried it on. She rushed out on the same day to buy one too.

  9. Love that Karen Millen dress - you look so pretty in red! And now I'm off to buy some AW tee shirts!

  10. This reminds me of the (professional) photographer who covered our wedding. I remember my mother asking : "Who was that man( 50-year-old something at that time) who was walking back and forth during the ceremony ? ". He was wearing a faded green checked shirt with light brown corduroy trousers and a 3 or day beard. Not very stylish to get unnoticed... You were obviously a thoughtful photographer who paid attention of how to dress during the different steps along that day !

    1. What a kind thing to say! Thank you :) I love your anecdote about your wedding photographer. I attended a few weddings where I saw shabbily dressed middle aged men lurking about. It was only after the wedding that I realized that they were the photographers.

  11. You look beautiful in both outfits! LOVE the jacket in the first one, swooon! I don't blame you for wearing pants when doing photography at weddings.. I think I would be so distracted seeing a photographer in a dress/skirt laying on the floor trying to get that shot!

  18. Both of your outfits are lovely. How do you find the Wang tees? I used to have the singlets (three or four) but the armholes stretched out really bad and the pulled a bit. I've been trying to find alternatives ever since. And love their dress, perfect for a wedding reception :)

    1. Mine have stretched a little but not overly so. I've found that the fabric can be rather fragile. I rarely wash by hand even though that's what's on the care tag. I do alternative mine with ones from Uniqlo though which are great but not as flattering. They're only £10 a piece but they wear incredibly well.

  19. That is one AWESOME Zara jacket and I also love how you paired it with the red printed dress! Veddy chic. The stone grey background complements the picture beautifully.

I love the AW tees too but they don't love me back. :( I keep getting small holes to the right of the waist area. It kills me.

    1. Oh no! I had a small hole on one of my AW tees but I patched it back. Fingers crossed, that'll do the trick. I just hope this new white tee won't be as fragile. Not to bang on about Uniqlo *grin* seeing that you can't order online in the US yet but I've found the quality to be amazing.

  21. I want that jacket too. Looks amazing on you. Oh I love seeing these photos of you. That dress is lovely too.

  22. Love your look on both, but I can say I'm more comfortable on your first outfit myself. Love your daughter's conversation, and can relate as I am not looking like having a fake smile ( looks like you are not )but I'm freezing doing a solo outfit shot which rarely happens and my daughter always kidding me on that part when she take the shot.

You're fantastic taking photos of your friends wedding and can I say you're gifted on that.

  23. Oh Marlene, thanks for obliging! I love both your outfits, how could you not post them..lol??

Between the 2, my fav is the first one with the IM jacket, plain tee, slim pants and neutral sandals. It is so you, and has all your favourite elements in that outfit!

    Really made me day:)

  24. haha! my fake smile ends up being a little lopsided as well, don't know why my forced attempt ends up lacking symmetry. I've never understood the hype over expensive tees either (especially those AW ones everyone's been sporting), but from your description I guess I can see that they're expensive for a reason. I'd love to try them out! love that Zara jacket too! such wonderful structure to it.

  28. It's truly the weirdest, most contrived thing to take photos of ourselves to present to the blogosphere. It's like smile but not too much, don't smile oh I look angry, whatever....:) The IM jacket looks great on you!

  29. You truly look lovely and do both looks so well! Thank you for sharing with all of us:)Very chic!!!!

I'm not a tee shirt girl- they draw attention to my scrawny chest and ribs, but I have a few from Kain and The Row that make me understand what all the fuss is about expensive tees.

  30. I love the IM jacket, it looks so amazing on you Marlene! LOVE these outfit posts. Promise you'll do more :)

Definitely thumbs up on AW tees -- I have a few and they are really amazing. You only actually need a couple. Also, Helmut Lang (and Helmut) does great basic tees. I swore I wouldn't buy more than one but I can't help myself!
