A Parody of Street Style Poses

Monday 29 October 2012
After a hilarious conversation with Ingrid of The BagHag Diaries and Lisa of Stylisa both of whom attend fashion shows in Paris, Milan and London every year, we came to conclusion that there are 5 common poses that dominate the street style scene. There are now many who mill around outside the shows hoping to have their photos taken by the street style photographers. They're not there to attend the shows. Meanwhile, buyers, editors or journalists often have to make a run right after a show and have little time to be photographed.

After a few pointers from these two ladies who'd spent a fair bit of time observing the circus that ensued during the Fashion Week, I decided to put the poses to test. So you've got the 1) crossed leg with a dreamy/faraway gaze  2) pretending to be on the phone (I'd love to see their reaction when the phone actually rings while they're supposedly to be on a call)   3) the hahahaha... looking pretty while breaking into a gentle laugh pose   4) I'm a badass, don't you dare photograph me but I'm secretly thrilled that you do  5) a gentle flick of the hair

Pose 1: I tried getting my legs into an X position but Grace, a friend who'd kindly agreed to be my photographer commented that I looked like I was busting to go to the loo. She's not wrong there. This is MY position when I'm dying to pee but there isn't a toilet in sight. The faraway look was probably a little too literal here. It would've worked without the hand doing the "The sailor went to sea sea sea....."

Pose 2 & 3: As you've already guessed it, I'm pretending to be on the phone. I felt like an utter dork. I tried to combine number 2 and 3 together. You know, the hahahaha....  pose.  Both Grace and I were in hysterics by now. The neighbors thought we were on drugs.

Pose 4: What 39 year old mom in suburbia UK would be crazy enough to undertake a demented version of the I'm a badass look? Anyway, let me be the first. So I shook my hair to get the tousled effect, glared into the camera, attempted an open mouthed pout just like a goldfish and voila, attitude. Or so I thought.

Pose 5: Once a tomboy always a tomboy. It was the most inelegant flick which sent my tresses straight into my mouth. Another flick nearly caused me to have a crick in my neck from over-straining.

I decided to inject some originality into my own pose. It's the deer caught in the headlights or otherwise known as the Marlene pose. It's also my usual look when a camera's pointed in my direction. Whew! I thought style blogging was easy but Tyra Banks has a point here. Modeling is darn hard work. I think I'll leave the posing to the experts.

  2. LOL...I'm guilty of one and four. But honstly, though....I don't know any other poses so I'll just stick to them. Ha!

  3. Gosh, what a laugh! I love pose #2, although, really, your outfit isn't wacky enough - you also need a sequinned mini skirt, sunglasses that cover half your face, and a pair of ankle-snapping heels =)

    1. I thought of wearing the flashiest outfit during the photo shoot but I think the residents who had the misfortune to observe would probably call 911 to report the escape of a mental patient.

  4. haha, you made me laugh so hard! I love your outfit and you poses-please post more real person show later. BTW, I am also a 39 year old mom that has similar build as you.

  6. You freaking rock Marlene! Love this! You have such a great sense of humor! :) You nailed all these poses as you did that outfit! So chic and you look beautiful! Lovin' the CLs on you!

  7. Lol so funny, the cellphone one racks me up the most - I never get these poses. My pose generally has to do with touching my shoulder or my hair. Safety net haha.

  8. This had me smiling the whole way through! I love that you're able to have a whole lot of fun and have a giggle at yourself, blogging and posing - all of it really. I such at posing. I like the Marlene pose the most - you better be careful, you'll have bloggers trying to imitate you! xoxox

  9. This post made my Monday really happy!! You are so funny Marlene:) And it is true that most of what we see these days are part of the fashion circus. It's fun and frivolous, like the icing on the cake. But I think I prefer the more natural and authentic dressers.

  11. I laugh too much when I read The bag Hag post about this, she's witty narrating all the scenario, right? But I also laugh in double seeing you pose like her too! ha ha. It's really hard to do it when you are not use doing it or the least not the way fashion blogger does it.That's also the reason why I don't do an outfit post as much as I want too, I will look like a frozen chick in front of the camera most of the times. When I do have a good one, it's only luck! But I love how you try to do it. The flip of your hair, oh my!ha ha! I just can imagine how you and your friend loose calories while laughing too much while doing your photo shoot.

Thanks for this happy post and the fun facts about the money pose.

  12. OMG I love this post, it's hilarious! You do the poses SO WELL and I am so naive, I thought all those people were actually on the phone!

  13. Hahaha, very sporting of you to demonstrate. One reason I pose headline outfit posts is because I do not get posing at all!

This post made me smile, thanks :)

  15. You are so funny, this post really made me laugh. You are right! I really recognize this from the streetstyle photography. Love your outfit by the way, so elegant!

  16. This is fantastic and sooo funny! I love the talking on the phone one. The whole outfit looks fabulous too - you've just got a knack of putting things together so well and pulling them off. What a lovely fun way to start Monday morning and half term with the boys! I can't pose and it's even harder when the Grumps does it so begrudginly and the small camera men can't take a single in focus shot. We have no budding David Baileys in this family.

  17. Hilarious! You do a very good badass :) but my favourite has to be the one on the phone. So cute! (you should adopt it ;)
Love your outfit in these picture. So elegant, stylish and natural. I can also see now how you wear your CL shoes - they complement the look perfectly.
    Excellent post.

  22. M, you had me in stitches laughing! :D In any case, now I'm tempted to imitate with my own poses! But oh, nvm, I don't wanna show my face, so that's not really going to work. ;)

  23. This is hilarious Marlene. I tend to avoid all 'common blogger poses' in my outfit post, you forgot the common 'hair tuck behind ear pose' and 'head, looking down' pose.

  24. No pose can downplay what a cool look you put together. Love it all!

  25. Hey Marlene, I need your opinion.

Do you think I should sell/swap my Timeless Clutch (exactly same as yours) for a Halfmoon WOC? I used the clutch for less than 5x since I bought it a year ago.

I reckon I don't used it so often as I have to hold on to it, hence the WOC. I swore that I will never buy another Chanel due to the frequent prices increases. It looks like I may have to break that...

    1. hi Cecilia,

If you often avoid using the purse because it just doesn't suit your lifestyle, chances of you actually doing so in the future is probably very slim. The Half moon WOC is a pretty bag which has the option of wearing it in various ways, particularly if you like being hands free. However, you can also tuck the strap into the purse if you prefer to use it as a clutch. Hope this helps!

  26. Haha..Gotta love this post and your dedication to replicate/analyse each pose. I am so freaking unnatural in front of a camera and that always result in awkward position.

You look very chic and uouthful...nowhere close to 39.

  27. You're so funny! I love this post. you have very nice swishy hair, I wish mine was like that x

  28. You are hilarious and gorgeous! x

  29. Had me in stitches because these poses and others are what we all do in our little moments of awkwardness in front of the lens! Another great one is the 'flamingo'. Standing on one legs with the other kicked out behind.. You do so well with your photo's. I'm still trying to get comfortable with standing still and looking 'at' the camera. It's not going well... I looked like a stunned mullet unless I'm dancing or moving around. Ha ha... the challenges!

  35. Oh dear oh dear, I guess I must be overdoing pose #1.. This was hilarious Marlene, I wish I could have been there in person. You forgot to mention the "I'm just walking by" pose. On another note, you look amazing here!

  36. It's nice to see a humorous take on the fashion blog poses!

And I love this pairing of the textured jacket with cuffed boyfriend jeans.

  37. Haha! This post really made me laugh Marlene! It's so true though, you really do see the same poses over & over on the street style blogs, I'll never understand how the phone one became so popular, it's ridiculous! I try not to purposely do any of the cliche ones but I guess I sorta do the 'I'm a badass' one without realizing!
PS: Love how those Louboutins match your skin tone so perfectly!

  38. Hilarious! I CANNOT stop laughing! The "badass" parody is my favourite.

I don't usually photograph myself (hence the lack of outfit posts) but I'm working on it!

  40. Agree with the comments... Hilarious!

I just checked out another blogger's post after seeing this, and realised she did a lot of Pose #1. Hahaha. The minute I saw Pose #4, I knew exactly which blogger does that pose!!

I have to admit they do look good in it though. Haha.

  41. This post is CUTE! LOL :)
I gotta confess I'm not doing any better when it comes to posing as well. Even if my head has been cropped off in the pic, you can tell I'm just not a natural. LOL ;p
