Sweatshirts, anyone?

Lately, I can't help quivering with excitement whenever I see sweatshirts, particularly ones with a v stitching at the collar. I'll be honest, sweatshirts aren't pretty. They're far from flattering. They're even shapeless. But I'm addicted. It's a weird obsession. The thing is they're so comfortable and snuggly that comfort takes precedence over looking chic.  I bought two last winter and wore it non-stop for the past 10 months. My friends, bless them, being the typical polite English are too tactful to ask if I have other clothes.

My brother.....well, what can I say? Relatives are brutally honest. I wore my leopard print Isabel Marant sweatshirt when I called him via Skype lately.

Him: "What the heck are you wearing?!", he exclaimed. "Is that some sort of wildlife thing going on there?".
Me: "It's leopard print. It's Isabel Marant."
Him: "Isabel who?! Is that French lady you keep harping on about on your blog?"
Me: "What a minute?! Why are you reading MY blog?! STOP reading my blog!"

Pfffftttttt.........

So I decided to trawl on the internet for some supporting evidence for my case. You know... that sweatshirt can be just as stylish say, a peplum top. I guess the trick is to keep the sweatshirt rather lightweight and somewhat thin or perhaps pairing a thicker version and keeping the bottom relatively slimline. Not that I listened to my own advice. I've got the top heavy and bottom going here but my excuse was I was feeling rather sore after a sparring session in the ring with a very fit 17 year old.

I'm loving the ones worn by Kate Bosworth, a veritable fashionista who managed to spin a simple heather grey sweatshirt into different interesting and incredibly stylish outfits. So, what do you think of sweatshirts? Yay or nay?

  2. Love your look! I have bad associations with sweatshirts mainly from school - shapelessness - but really these days people understand about fit and the right amount of slouchiness etc..So far I've only ventured into slouchy jumpers :-)

    1. Eileen, my big head thanks you :) Oh! That's a great idea. Why didn't I think of pairing grey sweats with white denim?! Thank you for the tip.

  6. I'm definitely in support of the sweatshirt! I just got a great gray one from a thrift store that is more of less in keeping with these pictures of beautiful people in sweatshirts. Unfortunately I don't have Marant boots :( being tall and skinny makes everything look great, but that doesn't mean that the "normal" people can't wear it too!

  8. You look so pretty! Lovely smile. Ah, that leopard IM.....and the barenia (or is it gold?) Kelly.......love!

I'm loving fashionable sweatshirts, too. Love how it combines with the drapey skirts. Keeps it very feminine. Thanks!

    1. Oh and I want your hair.... :)

    2. Hiya Maria! What a nice thing to say. Believe it or not, I don't do anything with my hair. If I'm not careful, my thick hair would poof like a poodle. All I do is just wash, shake my head like a dog and then blow dry for 5 minutes and run out of the door. Some day, I'll try styling it... (emphasis on the some day).

The Kelly's a gold togo. It's gone all slouchy which I adore.

  9. Love this look and love seeing you in your posts. Totally yay to sweats - I have a few to keep me in the slouchy manner to which I've been accustomed but I have to say, mine are more high street and yours are more high end. Deep envy. And yes, Kate does rock those sweats doesn't she? I guess this means I can buy more :o?

  11. Yay for sure! I am so with ya on this one! Lately, I've purchased several sweatshirts of varying shades of black and gray in different cuts. I can't seem to stop myself since they just have such a cool and laid back feel. It's a nice basic to pair with printed pants or in your case, the opposite works well too. I agree! Kate is great inspiration for pulling off this look!

  12. I'm loving how sweatshirts can totally be dressed up or down to create a ton of looks, and I'm really liking how you styled this outfit Marlene! I've always loved that IM leopard sweatshirt and it looks too cool with the boyfriend jeans! Looking great sweetie!

  13. Absolutely YAY! I really love how you styled your little leopard number and that beauty is well worth wearing day in day out.

All I can say is brothers will be brothers. I think it's their birth right to take little digs at their sisters. Let's call it sibling love :) Great we have thick skin though.

I love a sweatshirt and they are definitely more versatile than they look.

By the way, I'm loving your new blog layout. Really slick!

  14. love the new layout and the fact that the first thing i saw today is this amazing photo of you! please post more! ;)

oddly enough i wore a black sweatshirt to work yesterday, something i picked up from uniqlo in KL, threw it over a pair of navy waxed denim and some sandals. didn't look too horrible, though your IM one is definitely a lot chic-er with that amazing print!

  15. Thanks for the comment on my blog - ironically I discovered yours just last week and had started following, as your style reminded me of like minded girls. Always nice to discover other kiwi bloggers, even ones living halfway across the world. I know what you mean about KW being so pricey in the UK - I'm lucky enough to get a discount here which always eases the pain of the purchase - if I lived over there I imagine my KW days would be numbered lol.

LOVE the jumper by the way. Actually, love sweaters in general. Even if they aren't overly flattering :)

  16. You look great! Love this outfit + your Kelly is gorgeous!

The conversation with your brother is absolutely hilarious! SO funny!

As for the sweatshirts, let's just say that I am crazy about them! I too find them extremely comfortable, and they are just the perfect solution for the days when you want a laid-back, relaxed yet cool look (which is like 80% of the time, in my case :)).

I got Zoe Karrsen (the blue with Oh La La sign :)) sweatshirt from Matches the other day and I LOVE it! Check it out, it is sold out everywhere else!

  17. haha your Skype convo is hilarious! xD I love sweatshirts too, to do that whole casual, chic look with a nice pair of sneakers and denim shorts. I have to admit I do get bored of them sometimes but there are definitely days when I love them! :)

  18. I am also slightly obsessed with sweaters. They're just so comfy! I like to combine them with skinny jeans and a pair of boots and that's it. :) I am really liking your IM animal printed one. Still regret I missed out on that one!

  19. Marlene!

It's alway fun to see YOU! And LOVE that IM sweatshirt. I think you should be flattered that your brother reads your blog - at least he's interested enough to read it! LOL! Anyhow, I can understand your obsession with sweatshirts when Kate Bosworth is your style muse. She makes the sweatshirt look so chic! I found a "cool" sweatshirt from Lululemon, and I feel like the bomb when I wear it! It even has the v in front!

  20. Yay for dorky siblings haha, your brother is a riot. I love that sweatshirt on you. I find them undeniably chic in that I-just-rolled-out-of-bed kind of way. For once you get style and comfort rolled into one. Definitely loving this new comfy chic trend.

  21. The v-necks remind me of the ones I used to wear in varsity and i can't for the life of remember the brand, but your ones are much more sophisticated....yes I am impressed your brother reads your blog!

  22. I always though sweatshirts look too sloppy - well you've smacked that thought right out of my head! If i could look as good as you do in a sweatshirt I would definitely own some! But alas this is not the case....

  23. Looking good! I love a nice fitting sweat shirt, the less athletic looks are better, I prefer the more collegiate look, navy blue and a shirt underneath.

  24. Love this outfit! You should post more pictures of yourself! What do brothers know anyway?
