One balmy evening

Thursday 9 August 2012

sunset-road

As dusk fell and the last ray of sunlight splashed over the regal centuries old buildings, the city took on a rather magical appearance. A couple of weeks ago, we had a respite from the constant rain so Lil L and I took the opportunity to go out for a walk while the hubs joined his mates for a pint of beer at the local pub.

It was a novelty to be able to stroll down the High St without having to maneuver around hoards of people and the market stalls. Several months ago, the street along the college (shown in the picture above) and a nearby 750 year old church were closed to pedestrians for a few days for the filming of Les Miserables. I heard that Aussie actors, Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe were in town for the shoot.

Needless to say, it was the perfect evening for an alfresco meal. The cafes and bistros that dotted around the town center were bustling with locals, all taking the rare occasion to dine outside and people watch.

It's also possible to find little corners for a little peace and quiet if the reveling restaurant crowd gets a bit too noisy for your liking.

sunset-fishing

I was surprised to find a local resident trying his luck at fly fishing in the shallow waters. The strong river currents are more commonly used for pushing the wheel of the local mill to grind wheat into flour. The river is also home to a small population of ducks.

pizza

Since Lil L was feeling a little peckish, we popped into one of our favorite pizzerias for a bite to eat. What a perfect way to end the night. Hope you've enjoyed a little glimpse into our life!

  5. I barely scratched the surface of Winchester when I used to go down there to visit the IBM site in Hursley. After 4 hours driving to get to Hursley - I never had the energy to wander around in the evenings. It's a shame as it looks so beautiful but I doubt I will be visiting any time soon. The pizza does look yummy though. That's my kind of pizza!
