3 Ways to Wear Sweatpants

I wrote about the current sweatpants "trend" a few months back (here). I use the word trend loosely  because I've been wearing sweatpants for decades. The tapered and slimline cut is definitely more palatable to the eye in order to avoid the "I'm heading out to the gym" or "I'm a total slob" look. Especially when I haven't stepped into a gym for years. Actually, I lied. In a moment of madness, fueled by the excitement from the incredibly exciting Olympic Taekwondo matches, I made it to 2 classes before injuring my groin ligament and have been hobbling since. Splits schmits....!

On a side note, I've introduced my Mini Me to the world of sweatpants. I found these brushed cotton sweats from Petit Bateau at 75% off. I know....I know...... Mom wants to dress daughter like herself. Now, it has come back to bite me in the youknowwhere. To my dismay, she has decided to ditch all her pretty dresses in favor of her new favorite sweatpants. Le sigh......

I've got plenty of excuses lined up for wearing sweats. Cue whiny voice........ (it's the result of hanging around with too many 6 year olds).

1) It's the summer holidays. The weather sucks and I can't be arsed to dress up. That's 3 in a row. See? I can't count before my 2nd cup of coffee.
2) I work from home so dressing up can be a little pointless at times. Besides, I nearly gave the postie a mini heart attack when I opened the door in my ghastly velour Juicy Couture tracksuit. Best not to ask the color if you're on meds. I don't want to be responsible for you keeling over in shock.
3) We're traveling quite a bit over the summer months and I can't bear the thought of the waistband digging into my jelly belly.
4) I no longer have to unbutton my jeans when I gorge on a meal. The elastic band rocks.

As you can see, I'm channeling the Kate Moss' effortless chic style (otherwise known as putting on any clothes that's within arm's reach) complete with that nonchalant attitude she's famous for (being thick skinned enough to look decidedly disheveled out of sheer laziness to dress oneself) and deliberate messy hairstyle (aka can't be....you guessed it....arsed to brush my hair).

So what do you think about the sweatpants trend? Yay or nay?

  1. I think sweatpants can make a really cool look when styled like how you've done with these three awesome outfits! :)

  2. I love the sweatpants trend. I am even hoping it makes it way into my work although I doubt it. This will be fabulous for the plane though!

  3. i love sweatpants, and i am guilty of owning a pair of juicy velour sweats myself, though best not to ask what the colour of mine was either, ahhaha!! i think the a.wang one at least look smart enough to wear out, especially in the way you've styled them. the only reason why i haven't got myself a pair is that i would be tempted not to take them off for a week. the ones i wear at home are best left at home, i might be mistaken for someone who wears 'trackie dacks' with ugg boots here.. aussies are so laid back some times it's scary!

  4. I'm really loving your super styling of the humble (just necessary) track pant. I would happily get around in any of those gorgeous combo's. The can't be arsed idea... totally my thing :)

  5. Oh I am still opening the door to my postie is my old velours and a vest top - I'm a slob at heart.

  6. You gave me the perfect excuse to wear track pants, my holidays' restaurant tour have left me some extra pounds around the belt ... Love all the casual ways to wear them !

  7. I would wear them if I could find a pair that didn't cling to my thighs - I can never find them cut roomy enough to achieve the look I want!

  8. I don't own sweat pants - quick, we need to go shopping so that I can fix this! All your 'excuses' are so very valid! You had me totally at "It's the summer holidays" need you say more? :)

  9. Why not? I have a super comfy french terry pair from jcrew. Haven't worn me much because it's .... hotter than hades over here. But I imagine giving them lots of use if it turns cooler.

Ps - I remember the juicy sweatsuit :-)

  10. A big "yay" from me. Thanks to your earlier inspiration, this morning I am actually wearing one of two black narrow sweatpants from T by Alexander Wang that I bought earlier this year! I just picked up a charcoal grey pair from Outnet last week ($44!!) that should be here any day.

Love love them. It is still hot here, so they are a bit hard to style without resorting to Converse and T-shirts, buk think I'll switch out to my camel Dickers before I leave the house today thanks to this post. :) Do you think they would look odd with flat sandals? That's what I really want to wear right now but think the mood of the two pieces together may be wrong.

    Email coming soon! Hugs.

    1. Maria, it's so hot over where you are that even I can't imagine wearing wedge sneakers with the sweatpants. I've been wearing my T by Alexander Wang sweatpants with K Jacques Picon sandals. I'm sure I'll be back to boots and sneakers again seeing that the warm temperature will plummet again.

  11. I've resisted but I really want to find the perfect pair. You've styled them just as I would but that's not surprising!!

  12. I definitely want to do this comfy trend without stretch lycra - I find workout stuff too scratchy to wear after the class anyway. And any mention of Kate Moss - and I am there!

  13. Love how you styled the sweatpants in three totally different, yet all stylish ways! So inspirational! xx Kayin

  17. Big YAY for me ! I love the style of these sweatpants. I own two similar styles from Splendid which I wear very often on the weekends. It never occured to me that I could dress any of them up but in fact I could. I love your three outfits, I'm thinking that I should try a similar outfit with mine. Thanks for the inspiration ;) xx

  18. One could say that you are very skillful in dressing up the sweat pant. Can you do some outfit options for a mumu because that seems to be my outfit of choice around the house.

  19. I think the shoes are important in elongating the legs. I tend to look stocky in sweatpants and yours look so comfortable and chic! My fav is the evening look:)

  20. First, I want to say that your outfits look very chic as always! But I'm going to play devil's advocate and say that sweatpants remind me of working out and sports. I have nothing against physical activity(I've participated in swimming, gymnastics, track, and ballet in the past)but I think that a part of my style is to rebel against the items that I wore so much for practical purposes when I was younger, sweatpants included. Also, I find jeggings just as comfortable. :P

    1. LOL! I know what you mean. I don't think I'd try these looks with conventional trackpants. It would be too obvious but I've managed to get away with my 2 pairs.

  21. I love the sweatpants trend when it's styled well, like you have here. I have a few pairs of sweatpants, though they are definitely not suitable for out of the house wear! I think the Wang & Kooples ones have a much more 'smart' look to them with the tapered legs though & I think that's really key in being able to pull them off without looking like a slob. I shall have to get looking & see if I can find any similar styles, I feel inspired to try it out myself now! :)

  22. Such a chic way to wear sweatpants. I could never pull it off.

  23. awsome styling job! i love me some sweats and love these looks--i'm going to give them all a try! i started accumulating 'fancy sweats' (bc w/the pricetag hanging from some of them, they must be fancy!) a couple of yrs ago--they're perfect for a stay-home-mum...minimal prep time, conceals the 'i need to hit the gym' body and kinda looks chic! win-win situation!

  27. Nothing wrong with sweatpants - the chic or the not so chic variety. They're my pants of choice for days at home (when the hubs is not around - I think he would prefer not to see my saggy bottom in them). Lovely styling for a smarter look. Still not got myself a pair but thinking seriously about it.

  28. I think your outfits with sweatpants always look chic!! I happened to be going through my closet yesterday and noticed how many 'genie pants' I own {vaguely related to the sweatpant} and thought about how I loved them before they were in and still love them now! I just need to follow your lead on making them look smart!

  29. Very useful post! I got a pair of sweat pants from Etoile earlier this year and I've to confess I always have a bit of trouble deciding how to wear them. These are 3 great ideas. Definitely going to try to put together something similar. thanks xx

  30. Love the idea's I have never really thought of wearing sweats anywhere but in the house, or at the gym. I think I like the last idea. It actually looks like something someone can wear out and not get weird looks because they're wearing sweats.
