Guest Post: 3 Ways to wear J Crew Minnie Black Pants

Monday 23 July 2012
I've managed to twist my shopping buddy's arm, Laura to guest post for me. We're about the same height, wear the same dress size and have similar wardrobe. Here's the thing, she's in the US and I'm in the UK. I thought it'd be neat to shed some light on our friendship. We "met" on an eBay discussion forum 11 years ago when we were newbies. eBay was a very scary world back then. It was well before the proliferation of blogs and social media platforms. We clicked because we had this thing for handbags. Well, borderline addiction, if I have to be completely honest.

So.....11 years on... we're still chatting about our kids, Hermes, DvF, Isabel Marant, family...etc on a weekly basis. Unless we're dying to get our hands on something which meant dozens of emails will be flying back and forth in one single day. I've asked Laura to recommend a pair of black pants as I seem to be stuck in a denim rut. Her style is always classy and stylish no matter where she goes.

Hi everyone, I'm Laura, Marlene's friend from across the pond! I'm also an avid reader of her blog and was honored when she asked me to be a guest blogger from time to time. Over the next few months, I'll be sharing some of my fashion favorites, styling tips and homemade recipes for natural beauty care. Thanks for reading!

Look 1: Date Night

Minnie-look2

Outfit: Diane von Furstenberg Pintura blouse, Cole Haan black patent peep toe pumps, JCrew Minnie, Tiffany Victoria diamond bracelet and Chanel caviar 2.55 bag.

The JCrew Minnie pants can be styled to work on most figures and are one of those ubiquitous "must-haves". It doesn't have to be the JCrew Minnie - any black, slim and cropped pants with a nice weight to it will do. I personally love the Minnie because they fit me, are affordable and they simple never fail.

Look 2: Parisian Street Perfect

Minnie1-momo

I just slip into these in the morning and I'm instantly transported to the St Germain des Pres of my mind even when the highlight of my day is whatever takes place at the post office or the school run. Or maybe I'm Audrey Hepburn clad in a fitted 3/4 sleeve cashmere turtleneck, Repetto BB flats on my feet toting a battered Louis Vuitton Monogram Speedy. Yes, folks, these pants have powers. And they're pure chic!

Look 3: Weekend Farmers Market or Resort Time

Minnie-look3

Outfit: Zara floral blouse, JCrew Favorite Tank, Sam Edelman Gigi sandals (Global, here), Balenciaga Anthracite Giant Hip cross body bag, JCrew Minnie, Marc by Marc Jacobs aviator sunglasses, $5 Fedora I found in the window of a little tourist shop by the beach.

I also love that they're a chameleon. They always jump into my suitcase because they're just as easy to pair with a chambray pop-over and Converse as it is a sequinned tunic and Manolos.

I hope you've enjoyed the styling session with Laura!

  3. love this post...i agree--the minnies are magical! not only are they super-versatile taking you from day to night, casual to dressy, but they are figure flatterers! i don't know how, but even on my i-ate-a-pint-of-ice-cream-for-dinner-i-feel-like-a-whale days, they somehow always zip up and hide my pooch! thanks for even more styling ideas!

  4. aw, love the styling, I so need to make more of an effort day-to-day. It's amazing how good a good outfit can make one fee. Other than that, I tried on the Minnies when I was in the US in March - unfortunately I must have one of those demented figures and they did not fit me :( seemed perfect though.

  5. I am somewhat hesitant to admit this . . . but I don't own a single pair of pants, black or otherwise. Also, I'm not the biggest fan of J. Crew. But Laura--you are so convincing, I'm going to find a way to visit J. Crew soon and see if these will work. Your ensembles are divine, particularly the Parisian-inspired ones.

  7. Great ideas! J Crew is so hit and miss for me however, non jean pants are a practical necessity for running around when it's too cold for bare legs and skirt/dress and too warm for the same with tights and boots. Believe it or not I managed to find some great fitting ones in Zara in black and navy that are washable - that's the other thing, I don't want to add more dry clean only stuff in my closet especially for everyday items. I love that you dress them up and down! Thank you!

  8. This was so fun to read.. Her first outfit had a 2.55 classic flap and what can I say, a girl after my own heart too..lol!

I used to buy J Crew through an ebayer friend as Singapore does not carry it. After a while it got a little costly having items shipped over and I stopped. These J Crew pants are making me think again:)

You blog is always so interesting Marlene!

    1. Thanks so much! No, I wish I had the time to maintain my own blog but not right now. :( So honored that M will let me borrow hers once in awhile.

  11. I'm the person they fail on! I looked atrocious in them - if you have a flat bottom, stay away, it just makes it flatter.

  13. Laura - the outfit choices are fantastic - but I have to say I was SO taken by your story and how you both met. I love that it was online all those years ago and you're still connecting 11 years on. How amazing and what a friendship it has obviously developed in to.

  23. Love this and all the looks are fab! I started on ebay about 11 years ago selling Charlies designer baby clothes as being an older mum I had no one to pass them on to! Ebay was so different back then, love how you became friends through an auction site x

  26. Looking from these choices, one can tell you two are friends because you ladies share the same taste and interest in clothings and accessories wise. What a unique place to meet and form a decade long friendship i must say. Looking forward for more post from her.

  28. Love your choices, Laura. Parisian Street Perfect is my favourite set (I've just bought the same Momo jacket!)
As someone else said above, I can see why the two of you are friends - your tastes in fashion are quite similar. xx

  29. Laura!!! I've been away (thus Internet challenged) and just got back to "normal". I looked at the pictures before I read the intro and thought "Hey - Laura's Bolide?!?!"

Love your outfits. You have piqued my curiosity on the Minnie pant. Love the printed blouses you use, too, esp the gorgeous grey DVF in the first ensemble. Looking forward to more blog entries from you. :)
