Summer Essentials: Comfortable Wedges & Flats

Thursday 31 May 2012
wedges
1. Kork-Ease Ava  $99.99
2. Stuart Weitzman Alexlo  $179
3. A.P.C Wedge Sandal  $306.35
4. Tory Burch Camelia  $122.90
5. Taryn Rose Krissy  $197.99
6. Roberto del Carlo Leather & Cork Wedge   $401.27
7. Wallis Woven Strap Sandal  $84  (UK, here)

Currently,  I'm obsessed with finding a pair of comfortable summer sandals. Okay, a few pairs to be perfectly honest. What's that saying about a woman can't be too thin or too rich? Well, she can't have too many pairs of shoes either, says the lady who preaches the 1 in 1 out rule. After spending years in agony walking in heels, I want to be comfortable. I find it next to impossible to maintain a semblance of composure and grace when I'm in agonizing pain. Oh wait, it can be done. That is if I have a bucketful of botox injected into my face.

In fact, last month when I wore my skyscraper Stuart Weitzman wedges out, I ended up holding on desperately to the wall as I shuffled down the lane. The guys at the offices that lined the street had an eyeful. Not for the right reasons too. I want to add a couple of inches to my height without resorting to bone lengthening surgery. I want to be able to look chic (I hope), run, walk and stay upright for hours at a time. Is that too much to ask for? Thus began my search obsession for sensible heels.

Flats
1. Sam Edelman Gigi Sandals  $65 (or here and UK here)
2. K Jacques Orion Rouge  $224
3. Marc by Marc Jacobs Low Wedge Ankle Wrap Sandals  $156
4. Ancient Greek Sandals "Medea" Wedge  $266.67
5. Sam Edelman Trina Sandals  $100

After years, nodecades of making lots of mistakes, I now realize that shorties like me need strappy flats. Not the ones that have lots of spaghetti looking straps that grip my ankles like varicose veins. I like to think it as KISS (keep it simple stupid).  I've found Sam Edelman Gigi or K Jacques Picon sandals to be very flattering regardless of one's height. Nude tones make a world of difference too. If you have legs like Gisele, in which case, kindly discard all my suggestions and just wear a mini everyday. If you've got 'em, flaunt 'em.

If I have a deep pocket (think Mark Zuckerberg's bank account), I'll say, what the heck, get them all. Common sense prevails. What I need to do is narrow the selection down to a sensible figure.

  1. I've been dealing with this issue, too. I grabbed a couple pairs of the Kork-Ease Ava sandal, and they are certainly the easiest I've ever walked in (although others feel differently as they "rock"). My complaint is craftsmanship--I felt a little "taken."

I'm wondering anymore if wedges are a summer must--so I'm also now on the search for flats! When I go to Boston soon, I'll check out as many labels as I can. In the meantime, I've ordered more Church's. They aren't necessarily hot-weather friendly, but they work.

  2. Gosh it's funny that I could've totally written this post! I have a couple of mid-heeled sling back wedges that have seen better days but I haven't found suitable replacements! UGH! I'm intrigued by the SW Alexlo!

  3. I'm always looking for comfy summer sandals as well. I tried on the Kork-Ease Ava's last week and thought they looked too clunky. I think I'm just gonna go back to my trusty Worishofers.

  8. So many cool pairs to choose from! From the wedges, I'm really loving #6 and for the low heels I'm partial to the Sam Edelman pair because I own a couple of different colors in that style. I hope you end up finding some that you're happy with but I'm sure you will! :)

  10. I found my cheap and cheerful pair from Primark of all places and I did a whole day's shopping without any blisters or them rubbing. I know you'll find some soon. I also ordered the Carvela Krimble as an alternative as the heel is blocky which makes them quite stable. Flattering on the leg too. Nearly all of the wedges with the exception of no.3 look very comfy as the gradient of these are the steepest (I'm so practical) - however, I'm kind of drawn to No.3 - it has "classic" written all over it. And I love the Sam Edelman sandals as well - kind of bling in the most understated way.

  11. Love all these especially the Gigis and the Stuart Weitzmans. I have a low wedge pair from Kurt Geiger which I love and have already worn a lot this year so comfy.

  12. i can so relate, especially to your story of the stuart weitzman wedges! i've done something similar myself, more than once too ;p

can't wait for summer myself! love #1 and #4 from your wedges pick and #3 from sandals is perfection! i find nude shoes to have the best 'lengthening' effect, as do slip-on mules without the ankle strap - a type of shoe i used to wear all the time but find just too inappropriate for sydney streets..

  14. I don't understand how some women can tolerate heels. I just bought some new heels that I didn't do the math right (platform + heel height) and they're like 6" heels! They look so great on, but I was walking like a robot on hot coals around my place. I'm determined to will them into comfort and graceful walking...Okay, back to your post, I'll take #6 from the wedges and #4 from the sandals.

  15. Love this. I swear by K Jacques- so comfy and chic too. It made me really happy that in the past week it's warmed up enough for them.

  16. Whoops on the 'viewing' for the local office workers! It's difficult because of all the gorgeous, yet not heel tolerant pebbled streets you have. My favourites are number 1 in the wedges category and 1 in the flats :) Great finds!

  18. Wedges are much esier to walk in for me than heels. Thanks to the chunky and stable platforms i know i wouldnt embarrass myself in public.Your selections look divine, i am on a hunt myself to find something to pair with clothes to wear in Hawaii. Probably want a pair of flats and another pair of wedges.

  19. I know what you mean about heels! I think the worst thing about heels is when you're on, say, a deck or a cobblestone street and those thin little heels will just fall into ever nook and cranny. I love stilettos--I definitely think they are the most classic shoe--but I think I can only wear them under very specific circumstances (aka: when I know exactly where I'm going). I have the Sam Edelman Trina sandals in black and I wear them everywhere. They're just so perfect. I have short legs with thick thighs, not to mention I'm generally very short, but I don't even care with these shoes--they're just so comfortable and go with everything!

I've heard great things about comfort with Fluevog shoes (coincidentally, a brand I used to follow when I was super in goth/punk clothes), and they've recently come out with some really interesting looking pumps that I'd like to get my hands on:

I hope they're as comfortable as the reviews say they are!

    1. Thank you for the recommendation. I had a look at Fluevog website. Too bad they don't have my size :( I'm glad to hear that the Trina sandals are comfortable. I wish more shoe designers think about comfort instead of making more skyscrapers that we can barely walk in.

  21. Love the Taryn Rose wedge. The high cross strap looks pretty. They don't have them around here as much as they used to. Shame because nothing was more comfortable than Taryn Rose. Those Kork Ease are a close second.

  22. i'm not sure if anyone else mentioned these, but i'm kind of digging saltwater sandals. i've bought them the past 2 summers for my toddler daughter but i've recently seen some hipster moms at the playground wearing adult versions! they're cheap, super comfortable and semi-stylish in that downtown, hipster way! they come in a bunch of colors (and cheap enough if you want to buy more then one!) and added bonus--they're waterproof which comes in handy when running thru the park sprinklers w/your little one! :) (anon-aka nycbagfiend! :))

  23. I'm always on the hunt for comfy sandals as my feet take a beating on the sidewalks here. Low wedges are much more comfortable for me than totally flat. I love those Ancient Greek sandals!

  24. Nice selections. I love wedges. My all time favorite wedge sandals are those from Cole Haan with the Nike Air technology. They are very comfortable. I've been wearing my cage sandal version for two summers, that's how much I love them.

    1. I don't think I've seen the Cole Haan ones here in the UK. I'm so envious of those of you in the US. The choices are astounding over there.

    1. S, another brand for me to check out. I'm so pleased that all the big stores like NM, Macy's, Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom ship internationally now.
