Affordable Parisian Chic for under £40

Tuesday 1 May 2012
I've managed to convert my entire family to Uniqlo over the past couple of years. Several members of my family have made the pilgrimage to the flagship store when they came over for a visit and dropped a small fortune. Lately, I've taught my mother the art of online shopping which she has mastered well enough. I think I might have unleashed a shopping fiend into the world wide web, much to my dad's dismay. When her order arrived a few days ago, this Uniqlo cropped sweater and white skinny cargos caught my eye instantly. I feel that the combination works well with women across the different age groups. She's in her 60s and I'm in my 30s yet the pairing looks equally chic on either of us.

The striped jumper is quintessentially French. Since I'm a striped top addict, I will go as far as saying that it's a must have in any wardrobe. The skinny cargo deviates a little from the traditional white jeans, giving it a slightly more edgy vibe. I find that these classic pieces tend to outlast any fashion trends. The result is a stylish and contemporary outfit for less than £40. Who says one needs to empty out your savings to look good?

Update: Most UK sites do not ship internationally. Thanks to suggestions from a lovely reader, I've now included links to US websites.

  1. I just got my first Uniglo pieces!! A friend all the way over in England sent a couple pairs of Uniglo skinnies. I love them, LOVE THEM, despite picking a less-than-perfect size. I am now a big Uniglo fan, so I wish they'd get a US website up and running.

I love all of these pairings--it even makes a parka and sneakers look chic.

  2. I love the way you've style all these looks. I went straight to the Uniglo website ready to do some damage but they do not ship internationally :( Oh dear, I'll just have to find items to recreate this look. Love this post <3

  3. Your ability to style numerous looks out of a couple of basics is amazing! And I totally agree that both pieces transcend age groups. Awesome photos and such a cool post!

  5. Love all of these, especially the last outfit! Besides striped tops I'm a total sucker for olive colored military jackets!

  6. You've convinced me again that I really must go to Uniqlo. Head such great things you them.

Do you know that in my RSS feeder your blog has an advert under it for men's control pants??? Not sure what you've done to deserve that!

  10. I LOVE all the looks you've created here - but hey, leave some for the rest of us please! Lol the tee you blogged about the other day is out of stock and now this stripey sweater is gone in my size.....

    1. Oh no! The last time I was at a Uniqlo store, there were plenty of white tees available in all the different sizes. BTW, the stripey sweater is pretty small so you've got to size up or two. I normally wear a UK 8 or US 2 but I bought a Large instead.

  11. Love it all! Kicking myself for not stopping in the NYC flagship store while I was there as the website won't e-ship yet.

    1. Duh! I didn't realize that Uniqlo US is just an e-catalog. Bummer. Fingers crossed, they add the e-commerce bit to their website soon.

    2. Laura, word has it that they are opening in SF ... While its not exactly in your neck of the woods, it's closer than NYC!

  12. I can't get enough Uniglo , my first foray was when Jil Sander was still designing for them . Loved that +J range and wish I'd bought more now .
This year I found a little stone cotton jacket with 3/4 sleeves which looks great with cropped jeans and H scarf.
Love striped tops too, but the big bold B&W stripes did me no favours unfortunately . I'm not all that keen on the colours for the Summer knits at Uniglo , but hop over to Petit Bateau and all their stripey tops are fabulous .

    1. I think my basics are made up almost entirely from Uniqlo and Petit Bateau. You're absolutely right about PB's current collection. Fabulous and great price point too.

  13. You photograph your outfits with such life (if that makes any sense). Every outfit is spot on and I love the yellow K Jacques with the navy in the sweater. I love how timeless each of these looks is.

You've really inspired me to take a trip back to Uniqlo. I've admired the quality and design but I've had trouble with fit and ended up getting discouraged. I didn't have time to try anything on last week, but there were a number of basic items that I liked.

Hope you are enjoying having your mom visit.

  16. I love that cargo jacket! I must take a trip to Uniqlo. I was tempted to stop by there the last time I was in Soho, but the crowds scared me off. Will have to attempt it again when I have more time.

  17. I'm so sad we don't have Uniqlo where I live !
The 4rth outfit is absolutely perfect, the silk scarf worn as a belt is such a pretty detail.

  18. It`s so much fun to play around with the simplest basics. You show very well how versatile they are! This is a very good post!

  19. This was such a fun post to read! I still don't have a basic pair of white pants - love the little cargo detail and that it isn't too obtrusive. How was the Le Pliage tote btw??

    1. Kat, It's made in Tunisia but the workmanship is definitely not bad for the price. The leather is buttery soft and the strap works a treat. My only concern would be the protruding corners because they will get worn down pretty quickly.

  20. Perfect summer outfits Marlene! Sadly, I tried to order the T-shirts from the New York Soho store but they don't do phone orders anymore. Odd because I've ordered from them in the past. They said they are in the process of changing the system but, for now, those of in the US are out of luck unless we can get to New York.

    1. What a bummer. I find that stores like Zara, Uniqlo etc are slow on the uptake when it comes to e-commerce. Do you want me to find a couple of tees for you?

  21. I love all these looks, the green parka is very pretty

  22. LOVE all these looks! And it's fabulous that they can be worn at any age! I wished that that UNIQLO shipped in the US too! I guess I will have to wait till the next I visit my brother/family. On my list - the white tee and now a cropped striped sweater!

    xo, sam
