10 things I wish I'd known when I was younger

Tuesday 4 October 2011
If I could turn back the clock, I would've gladly drum a few words of wisdom to my younger self.

1. Resilience
Instead of spending months wallowing in self pity after hitting a major obstacle, I should've let myself cry for a little bit, then get up to face the music and soldier on. No one likes a whiner.

2. Speak less
There were times when I should've bit my tongue harder and fought the urge to blurt out words in anger. In fact, it's far better to be a listener than a talker. People like to be heard. There's no bigger compliment you can give to a person than to listen to what they've got to say.

3. Gossip
Let's revisit lesson no.2 for a second. You will never regret being more discreet. No one trusts a gossiper because if they've got something nasty to speak about everyone else, they would've blabbed about you too so don't join in.

4. Fear
Courage is doing what you're afraid to do. There can be no courage unless you're scared. - Edward Vernon Rickenbacker.

5. Appreciate my family
Isn't it awful that we often take the people who are dearest to us for granted yet treat strangers far better?

6. Pray more
I'm a little child in God's eyes. Just like it's hard to expect a 5 year old to understand the complexities of life, it's hard for an adult to gain wisdom without tapping into God.

7. Don't be complacent
There's no growth when one's stagnant.

8.  Enjoy the moment
When I was in my teens, all I wanted to be was plump. I spent years trying to put on weight. Now that I'm in my late 30s, all I want to be is thin and spend years trying to battle against the bulge.

9. Forgive more often
This is a hard one. To forgive is to get rid of the poison that has been built up inside you over the years. It's never healthy to hold on to bitterness which has the unfortunate habit of being etched into a person's facial appearance.

10. Nobody's thinking about you
There's no point being self conscious and worrying about what others are thinking of me because they're too busy worrying about themselves.

  1. Beautiful post. I do think we all have to make out own mistakes though in order to learn from them. On one hand, I wish I could tell my younger self so many things. On the other, not knowing them then helped form me into who I am today,

  6. Beautiful post - I love reading these from people. I need to take the "speak less" to heart, I always blurt out what I am thinking right away....!

  7. skippysays, you're absolutely right. It's wishful thinking but often the only way forward is to make plenty of mistakes along the way and learning from them.

ShinyPrettyThings, so did I. It's only when we're older that we realize how wise our parents are.

    Kim & Mona, thank you!

Laura, I need a little reminder to give myself a reality check every now and then.

Katherine, you and I both are inflicted with the same problem. I have to continually remind myself to bite my tongue - till it bleeds!
