The Perfect Dress

Friday 7 October 2011
My apologies for falling behind on my blog. It has been an extremely hectic week. I'm sorry if I haven't had the chance to respond to any emails and comments. I haven't had a chance to visit my favorite blogs too which I'm hoping to catch up when I get a breather in the weekend.

I'm a rather picky person when it comes to food, clothes and handbags. I won't consider purchasing an item unless it ticks all the right boxes. I've been known to wax lyrical about my favorite Kiwi designer in the past so forgive me if I do so again. Karen Walker is a woman's designer by which I mean that she designs for real women. She understands that real women have bits that they prefer to tuck out of sight. I have a rather boyish figure or otherwise known as the straight up/straight down body. Imagine a pencil. Yup. I kid you not.

When I was shown this red dress, I was rather taken aback. My entire wardrobe is made up of navy, black and grey. This dress is the antithesis of my daily uniform. However, the minute I put it on, I felt and looked like a million dollars. The longish sleeves hide my batwings (also known as arms), the tapered and structured waist makes me look like I've got a curve. The pleats around the tummy hide the jiggly jelly bits. The beautiful red print flatters my skin tone. What I'd love her to do is re-issue this dress in different texture and prints.

By the way, this dress is from her Hi Sister range which is far cheaper than her main line. The polyester fabric does not crease which is perfect for someone like me who detest ironing. Karen Walker is my go to designer if I want something that's quirky, unique and timeless. For such an eye-catching dress, I thought it'd go perfectly with a pair of simple Ferragamo black pumps and Chanel clutch.

  2. Awww, that's a very cute dress! Love the quilted bag and patent heels too :D Don't stress about falling behind. I don't blog on the weekends, so when Monday comes I feel I've missed so much. But you can't do everything all the time. We all need breaks. ((HUG))

  3. I tried the same dress in Myer not long ago. It was on sale in Myer, Perth. Didn't buy it though because it's not the right size. I thought it was nice and at the same time, I need to insert some colour to my boring black, white, brown n blue wardrobe.

  4. What a beautiful dress from Karen Walker! I love both the print (reminds me of a vintage Hanae Mori blouse I own) and the cut of the dress. It's very feminine and chic but at the same conservative enough for work place with a nice cardigan or blazer over top. I like how you paired it with very simple shoes/clutch and let the pattern shine, so to speak.

  7. This post is an excellent reminder for two things. 1) Experiment. Aesthetic surprises await! And 2) a few pieces that make you always feel great are all that needed in a wardrobe. It's a beautiful dress--I love the color.

  9. chicology, thank you!

Kim, you're always so sweet and kind. *hugs* I think I'm just going to vegetate this week to prepare for the onslaught of the coming weeks.

mrsallan, I normally wear a size 8 but I had to go up a size for this dress. I've had more compliments when I worn this dress out than my other usual uniform. I guess that means I should REALLY inject more color into my wardrobe

Lindsay, you're absolutely right. Drape a cardy or a blazer and this dress will be perfect for work.

Michelle, the Timeless clutch is truly versatile. It's just the right size too. I find some clutches too big and unstructured and there are others that I could only fit my cellphone and a few cards.

Lauraloo, you can find a few pics of me wearing this dress in FB.

    Lamia, thank you!

AA, you're absolutely right. You nailed it so perfectly. I've come to the realization that unless something ticks all the right boxes, there's no point in buying it because I'll never wear it. If the neckline is too low, I'll be self conscious etc etc.

    Kat, aww... thank you!
