Planning Autumn/Winter Wardrobe - Colored pants & Silk shirts

Wednesday 14 September 2011
The oversized silk shirts by Equipment is all the rage right now. The ironic thing is the silk twill feels exactly the same as the ones I bought from Shanghai at £6 a shirt. That was almost 16 years ago. I purchased two - an ivory and a beautiful light blue, both of which I wore to death and finally chucked them out many years later.  Fashion is so cyclical. Give it 10-15 years and what was so out of fashion would be in vogue again.  These Equipment shirts cost almost £200 and they're made in China. I can't justify the extortionate price knowing full well that the labor AND material would cost a fraction of the retail price.

When hubby wanted to get a pair of maroon colored pants, I thought he'd gone barking mad. And then I started seeing them everywhere in London on dapper looking gentlemen. The Italian men wore them beautifully. Now, I had to eat crow because I want a pair of red colored pants too. I had the opportunity to try out a pair of J Brand skinny jeans and hello, muffin top! I'm determined to try a few different styles because fellow blogger MakeMommyChic managed to look GORGEOUS in hers.  So with that in mind, I'm going shopping. Figuratively. I hope. The way I see it online shopping is free as long as you don't checkout.

  1. Love this look as well and thanksfully, it's actually a trend that I can wear to the office.

J.Crew makes great colored trousers, too! Have you also taken a look at Club Monaco? More minimalist and less preppy than J.Crew but they have some vary similar pieces like silk button-ups. We have lots of CM stores in Canada but elsewhere, I think you can find them on Shopbop.com

  2. Those skinnies are adorable! I'm also starting to check them out--not in red, but in waxed and chocolate and all sorts of scrumptious grey. But your comments on the shirts really hit home--why DO they feel so thin anymore? I got an equipment shirt from BCBG a few months ago--the fit was marvelous, but I could tell two washes and it would be done, so I took it back. Sigh.

I'm loving these planning posts. It's so much fun window shopping.

  3. What a fantastic suggestion, Lindsay! I've never thought of checking out J Crew trousers nor Club Monaco.

  4. Oooh - red pants! I love the ASOS pair! I already have an ecru/cream silk Theory button down I got for a song at Nordstrom.
Thanks for the info on Equipment. I've been tempted many times but won't put up with sub-par quality for that price. So far, my Theory one has been great.

  5. AA, I saw a pair of waxed pants and you know what, they were stunning! As for the Equipment silk shirts, they drape well and look great on but so did my old silk shirts. I expect perfection from a £200 shirt.

  6. lauraloo, I've always loved Theory clothes but they're soooo expensive here. I might be tempted to try out the £25 Asos jeans first to see if I can pull off the colored pants look.

  7. Hi, Thank you so much for the shoutout :) So unexpected!! Yes, I too, have seen the colored jean trend everywhere, and the problem is with all the different shades out there now it's so hard to pick just one. I definitely think that you can pull off the colored jeans look (imagine a red pair with your Louis Vuitton Cashmere scarf!- it would look stunning!). And, btw, i checked out on jbrands website and they are doing a petite line, for those 5'3 and under. So it might be a great option for you (they didn't have any colored denim in that section though :( - thanks so much for the post!

  8. You're welcome, Sharon. Gorgeous mama that you are! Thank you for the tips. I'll check out their petite line. I'm soooo sick of having to hem all my pants all the time.

  9. I bought the J Brand jeans during a sale and kind of regret it. The color is much brighter in real life than in the picture, and they fit more like jeggings than skinny jeans, so I've had a hard time finding a top that looks good with them. Hopefully I'll have success on that front soon and be able to post an outfit featuring them!

I've heard so many great things about Equipment blouses, but you're right - at the end of the day they're just over-priced silk button-downs. Thanks for talking some sense into me, because I was soooo close to buying one!

  10. The Blonde, I wonder if J Brand has a style that's skinny but has a straight cut instead of the tapered look. I'd love an Equipment blouse only if they're heavily discounted. I just can't get over the price tag!
