Canon 50mm f1.8 lens

Wednesday 30 March 2011
I'm a gadget junkie to a certain degree. I'm not one to upgrade whenever the new version appears on the market. That said, I'm only on a look-out if I have to fill a need. I've had my eye on this Canon 50mm prime lens for quite sometime. My first attempt at trying out this lens was 5 years ago and after a couple of blurry shots, I got rid of it in a hurry.

Canon 50mm f1.8 Lens available at Amazon £83.95

I've been searching for a smaller but an equally sharp lens to my current workhorse, Canon 17-55mm IS. I've spent the last few months reading every online review there is out there and checking out hundreds of photos on Flickr just to confirm that this lens actually does live up to its reputation.  I'd like to think that I'm thorough but my close friends prefer the term anal. Grrrrr...... There IS such a thing as being TOO honest.

This prime lens is cheap, made out of plastic which some have an aversion to, fast and purports to be super sharp from f5.6 upwards. I actually like the plastic casing (which I'm sure kept the price low) because lugging around my monstrous aluminium lens is starting to be a pain. Literally. This is light, small, takes super sharp photos and what's more, it fits into my handbags. You didn't think I was going to walk around in a Crumpet or LowePro camera bag, did you?

I tried it out recently and was amazed at the results. The photos were as sharp as my expensive Canon 17-55mm IS lens.

  2. Our little town is surrounded by daffodils and cherry blossoms. Such a pretty sight when I walk Little L to school.

  3. Funny you have this post as I just recently bought a Nikkor 35mm/1.8 prime lens. It's made of plastic, cheap, but super sharp and light for what it costs. I read almost every single review there is of this lens LOL! I was also thinking of reviewing it in my blog. Remember I was complaining about my DLSR camera when we met in London and was thinking of switching to Canon? Well, this lens is far superior than the expensive zoom one I had, which broke thanks to DD. That also means I'm stuck with Nikon for a while.

  4. Great minds think alike :P I remember our conversation about this. I've been very disappointed with most of the zoom lens that I'd bought. Did you travel to Paris with this lens? Lugging around a heavy camera and lens and whatnots nearly did my back in. Speaking of which, I've just bought another zoom lens to replace one that I'd sold. Fingers crossed, it's as good as the reviews I'd read.

Personally, I think both Canon and Nikon make fantastic cameras. If I were you, I'd stick to the camera body that you currently have and buy the lenses that suit your needs.

  5. My Paris pictures were still with my zoom lens, it broke there LOL! My Nikon D60 body is really, really slow now and as DD keeps on knocking it over, it doesn't help. I will need to replace it eventually and I've tried both the Nikon D7000 and Canon 5D Mark II. The Nikon (being smaller) felt better on my small hands. I've read great reviews about it too. Plus, it can take all manual lenses. Unfortunately, I've already sold off my Nikkor 50mm/1.2 manual lens (together with my Nikon FM3A). Otherwise, that would be a fabulous lens. But the sales person said it sometimes appear in the second-hand market so I may be able to snap one later on.

Have fun with your new lenses!

  6. Oh no! Boy, do I feel your pain. DD has broken my iPod, phone, MacBook, DVD player etc.

I've read fab reviews of Nikon D700. Unfortunately, it'll cost too much to replace my lenses so I'll stick to Canon for now. The 5D Mark II is out of my budget. I can't justify the cost seeing that photography is purely a hobby.

  7. That's what the sales assistant told me about the Canon 5D Mark II also. He said for what I need, the Nikon D7000 is more than enough.

  8. I managed to go to a camera store today. Canon 5D Mark II uses the EF system which meant that I'd have to change all my lenses. Oh well. It was too expensive anyway. I've narrowed it down to a 7D and its much cheaper counterpart, 550D.
