Hermes Evelyne: Fake vs Authentic

Tuesday, 21 September 2010
Recently, I came across a Hermes Evelyne GM3 which, by all accounts looked like the genuine article. The taurillon clemence leather was pretty spot on as well as the stitching. It almost smelled like the real thing too. I would've thought it was authentic had I not eyeballed the darn thing and looked it over with a fine-toothed comb. Unfortunately, I didn't take any photos of the fake Evelyne.

I know that there's a general consensus out there not to reveal too much information on how to tell a genuine bag from a fake. However, I'm of a different opinion as these ruthless counterfeitors tend to buy  authentic bags anyway, take them apart and make a near copy of the same thing. Hopefully, you'll know what to look for should you search for tell-tale signs of authenticity and not get cheated out of hundreds of pounds. I've taken close up shots of my own Evelyne PM2.

1. Blindstamp
You'll notice that the blindstamp is teeny tiny. In fact, the blindstamp on one of my bags is rather faint. The one on the fakeroo Evelyne was at least 20% larger and has deeper indentation.

2. Lining
The suede or rather the underside of the piece of clemence leather is slightly coarse. The suede lining on the fake Evelyne was a lot smoother.

3. Seam
The edges of my Evelyne is waxed and if you flip it upwards, you'll see the undyed underside of the leather. The fake has edges where the leather was folded in and stitched along the seam.

4. Clasp
The button/clasp on mine has a little gap and doesn't have any letters on it. The fakeroo doesn't have a gap and has the letters Y K M S (not in that particular order as my memory failed me) on it.

  2. Wouldn't say I'm an expert. I noticed these differences when I compared it to my own. I couldn't believe how well made these fake bags are nowadays.

  3. How about the strap? Is there always have a brand stamp on one of the side? Like hermes paris made in france? Is that true that some have and some not? Tks

  4. So far I've yet to see the stamp you've mentioned on the shoulder strap of an Evelyne. However, I believe you could be right. I've seen some anomalies with their bags but seeing that most of their products are made by hand, it can differ depending on the artisan.

  5. Hi, I work in a charity shop and we have a "Hermes Evelyne" bag.I really don't know if it's right or not. I have been through your list and it fullfills all the criterior except...that the strap fittings just don't feel good enough quality to be Hermes. The catches are stamped Hermes but one of them seems to have been damaged. It falls out of the strap loop and has little bits of plating off. I think the bag is Denim Blue(?). If it is right is it a GM3 and could you tell me what that means too? Thank you

  6. Hi. I currently want to purchase an item from ebay. The seller is from France. I found the date stamp weird, having 2 letters in one square (or rectangle for that matter). May I send pictures of the bag as well? Thanks.

  8. Where can I see the serial number on this specific bag?

    1. There aren't any serial numbers. Just blindstamps to show the year of production and the identity of the artisan.

  9. Just an FYI...Hermes started stampping the strap of the Evelyne in 2011.
Hermes started Stampping the strap of the Jypsiere in 2010.
